All Children in the USA Can Receive a Comprehensive Eye/Vision Exam

“Undiagnosed and untreated vision problems among school-aged children in the United States are urgent national public health challenges. For the first time in U.S. history, they are directly being addressed through insurance benefits of the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Beginning in January, 2014, vision care for children will be covered by many health plans as an essential benefit, no longer standing alone in separate vision plans, and no longer restricted by flawed vision screenings. Direct access to vision care provided by optometrists for children from birth through age 18, including comprehensive eye exams and glasses, becomes the new standard of medical coverage offered through the state insurance exchanges, at every level.” (AOA) Click here for more information.

Preventive vision care starts at infancy. As a parent, it is important to know how your child's vision development is affected as your child grows. Click here for a reference guide to ensure your child's vision develops in a healthy and timely fashion.

For those of you who have infants, take advantage of the American Optometric Association Foundation public health program, InfantSee®. Under this program, participating optometrists provide a comprehensive infant eye assessment between 6 and 12 months of age as a no-cost public service. Give your infant an early start on good vision care!

Speaking of infants, I’d like to introduce to the world, my new grand-daughter, Sierra Emma-Rose, born January 28, 2015. Giving birth to my own children was truly a miracle. Then seeing my daughters give birth to their own children… is beyond words.

For more than 37 years in developmental optometry, I continue to love the challenge that kids bring…their creativity, ingenuity and playfulness. It is you, my friends, patients and colleagues who have taught me and energized my passion.
With love and gratitude,

Lynn Fishman Hellerstein, O.D., FCOVD, FAAO
