Heterosexual Women and Syphilis

This webinar will explore the current rising syphilis trend in heterosexual women. It will also cover risk factors and causes for sexually transmitted diseases (STD). This webinar will discuss what medical mistrust is and how a health care worker can identify it in the clinic. This webinar will also provide strategies to build rapport and new innovations for prevention.

Here is what you can expect to learn at this event:
  • Current upward trends in syphilis in heterosexual women in Indiana and nationally
  • What it means for a patient to have medical mistrust about a clinic
  • Strategies to build rapport with minority communities
  • Innovative and prevention outreach among partner elicitation and case management


Virginia Bowen, PhD, MHS
Lieutenant Commander, U.S. Public Health Service
Epidemiologist, Center for Disease Control and Prevention Division of STD Prevention

Dr. Ginny Bowen is an epidemiologist in the CDC Division of STD Prevention with an emphasis on the surveillance of adult and congenital syphilis. She joined the division in 2013 as an Epidemic Intelligence Service officer before transitioning into her current role. Her work in the Division has included outbreak response, evaluation of novel syphilis tests, programmatic support for antibiotic-resistant gonorrhea detection, and syphilis surveillance. Prior to her work in STDs, she worked in international family planning. She received her masters and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in reproductive health at Johns Hopkins School of Public Health. 

Nursing Contact Hours

A total of 1.0* nursing contact hours will be available for this event. To successfully complete this activity, the participant must attend the entire session, complete an evaluation, and complete the Nursing Contact Hour Attendance Verification Form.
