Message from the Director

Welcome to the October edition of the Family Practice newsletter. Thank you for taking the time to click the links and read about the department activities. And special thank you to those who have contributed content and resources to share.

We are especially pleased to have a new spotlight that focusses on the background and accomplishments of Dr. and Elder Roberta Price as well as some Canadian Medical Hall of Fame appointees. As usual, you will find links to upcoming awards that are calling for nominations and opportunities for grant opportunities. 

Please look to the research listing to see firsthand the work that your colleagues are engaged in and where others have been in the news. 

As we move into fall, I wish you all the best for the school year and thank you for your contributions to the Department of Family Practice.

The Awards Committee is delighted to honour Dr. and Elder Roberta Price as the first nominee of the Something to Shout About initiative. Described by her peers as the "fearless leader and inspiration behind what [we] do on JEDI, Dr. and Elder Roberta has graciously and tirelessly shared her gifts and her knowledge with our department."

For over 30 years, Elder Roberta Price has actively shared her leadership, wisdom and teachings at UBC and throughout the Lower Mainland to assist both Indigenous and non-Indigenous community members to achieve improved outcomes in health care. A member of the Coast Salish Snuneymuxw and Cowichan Nations, she has been instrumental in helping to create shared spaces for both Indigenous and Western approaches to healing and health. Her ongoing involvement and leadership in research projects have been key to the continued work of decolonizing health care and creating cultural safety and equity for Indigenous patients.

What her colleagues say:

[Dr. and Elder Roberta] has graciously and tirelessly shared her gifts and her knowledge with our department. These not only include her wonderful work with JEDI, but also her outstanding leadership in the UBC FP Residency Program as Indigenous Program Co-Director and as Lead for the Anti-Racism Support Group.

The 2022 Research Facility Support Grants (RFSG)

Competition is open to faculty located at the UBC Vancouver campus and affiliated hospital sites. It provides one-year grants of up to $50,000 intended to enhance UBC research, training, and equipment sustainability. The application deadline is October 24, 2022.

Apply for Funding to Support Research Collaborations

The UBC Collaborative Research Mobility Awards (CRMA) competition is now open. It provides up to $5000 to support new or existing research partnerships between UBC researchers in the Okanagan and Vancouver. Faculty members from all disciplines are invited to apply. The application deadline is November 4, 2022.

Rural Physician Grant Opportunities

I wanted to let you know that RCCbc is once again accepting applications for our next round of Rural Physician Research Grants and for the Rural Global Health Partnership Initiative. The next deadline is October 31, 2022.  Note that rural physicians partnering with First Nations communities on projects (either research or non-research projects) are also able to apply for the global health partnership initiative. Below are summaries of the opportunities, and more information and the application forms are available on our website. 

Rural Global Health Partnership Initiative: For Health Equity at Home and Abroad

UBC Healthy Aging Postdoctoral Fellowship

The award will provide financial support to exceptional postdoctoral researchers to conduct research relevant to healthy aging at UBC. 

Fellows will advance research that contributes to the vision of the Edwin S.H. Leong Health Aging Program to harness the science of healthy aging in order to help people in BC, across Canada, and around the world stay healthy, happy and active longer into old age.

Call for Applications from Primary Health Care Decision Makers

TUTOR-PHC is accepting applications for its 2023-2024 training year. Individuals who are employed full-time in a role that shapes policy or manages programs that are directly relevant to primary health care are invited to apply.

The UBC Division of Palliative Care invites you to this year’s virtual CME Day, Back to the Future: Essentials of Modern Palliative Medicine, aiming to enhance your practice when caring for patients with palliative care needs. Workday Updates

Employees Now Able to Generate Their Own Employment Verification Letter: Current UBC employees can now create their own employment verification letter in Workday using a new report. These letters include basic employment information and are typically used to provide proof of employment or income to a third party, such as a financial institution. More info here.
