Dear Friends,

With the arrival of Spring, we can all take comfort knowing there will be brighter days ahead. The past 12 months brought numerous challenges for all of us as we experienced the difficulty and sadness of living through a pandemic.

Early on, cairns, which are stacks of carefully balanced rocks, started to appear on Southport Beach. The simple act of balancing stones requires patience and the physical effort of creating balance. As the number of cairns multiplied, it was clear more and more people were seeking solace by visiting Southport Park and our beautiful lakefront.

Our parks play a significant role in the overall health and well-being of our community by offering us a place to spend time in nature. Southport Park Association was founded on that very premise. It has been our ongoing mission to connect people, parks, and preservation, in an effort to foster appreciation and ensure enduring environmental stewardship of all our parks for the benefit and enjoyment of our community and future generations.

It has been a while since you last heard from us, but we have been busy behind the scenes and many exciting plans are moving forward.

In this issue we bring you up to date on the progress of the beach house renovations, the proposed Conceptual Landscape Plan for Southport Park as well as the launch of our new website. You will also learn about upcoming events with our community partners.

We welcome your involvement and thank you for your continued support.

New Southport Park Landscape Plan Adopted By City Parks Commission

On August 10, 2020, The Conceptual Landscape Plan was presented by SPA to the City of Kenosha Parks Commission and was approved by unanimous vote. Southport Park occupies 24 acres along the Lake Michigan Shoreline and its proximity to both the Chiwaukee Prairie State Natural Area and the City of Kenosha wastewater treatment plant, makes it a perfect candidate for an environmental and eco-friendly upgrade. We are very excited about the proposed improvements which include:

  • Naturalistic Prairie Garden landscape installation

  • Walking and cycling pathways

  • New activity areas for all age groups

  • Expansion of ADA accessibility throughout the park

  • Venue for watercraft and play equipment rentals

  • Defined location(s) for future parking expansion

  • Upgraded signage

  • Upgraded lighting elements

  • Accessible power sources throughout the park

SPA awarded grant from the Fund For Lake Michigan for WATERshed program

We are proud to be a partner with the WATERshed program which continues to provide Great Lakes education to our local youth and we are excited to announce that in 2020 SPA was awarded a grant in the amount of $16,730, from the Fund For Lake Michigan, to support this award winning educational program.

The WATERshed program connects students to the value of living in a coastal community, which provides us with clean drinking water, numerous recreational opportunities and can often be a source of tranquility. This year, the program transitioned to virtual learning, in an effort, to continue to fulfill the mission of connecting our next generation, to the Great Lakes. Over 2,000 students participated in the virtual field trip this year.

We are very grateful to the program director, Nancy Carlson for her dedication and determination to educate and inspire the youth in our community.

Southport Beach House

The Beach House renovations are underway! Phase 1 improvements were completed in 2019 and Phase 2 improvements are currently underway.

The City Council met on March 29th 2021 and, in the interest of safety, voted to keep the Beach House closed to the public until repairs are completed. While this pushes the reopening date back until at least 2022, we are confident that the quality of the repairs will justify the wait.

Trash Free Waters

Southport Park Association is looking forward to participating in the Trash-Free Waters initiative with our new partner the Great Lakes Community Conservation Corps. This project focuses on engaging community members to help reduce trash and debris in and around the shores of Lake Michigan.

Trash and debris can have a negative impact on wildlife, beach health, and our drinking water. Please consider joining us for one of Southport Beach clean-up days OR you can do it yourself at your favorite beach or park.

Community Outreach Nature Programs

Southport Park Association is pleased to announce our partnership with The City of Kenosha Park Alliance, Seno K/RLT Conservancy, and The WATERshed Program, bringing new community outreach nature programs to our neighborhood parks.

These programs will connect local children to science and the natural world in their own community. This unique opportunity will help build environmental awareness and appreciation for our local natural areas. For more information, please contact Nancy Carlson
