Enlighten introduces LDES Council at COP26


As a founding member of the Long Duration Energy Storage (LDES) Council, Enlighten was thrilled to attend COP26 in Glasgow last month, where our CEO, Steve Reynish was privileged to introduce the formal launch of the LDES Council, alongside Rachel Reid, Hydrogen, and CCUS Strategy Lead at bp.

Highlights: LDES Report Summary

Based on the extensive research and collaboration of LDES Council Members concludes that:
  • 85 -140 TWh of long duration energy storage needs (>8 hours) needs to be deployed globally to enable power grids to become carbon net-zero;
  • This will eliminate between 1.5 to 2.3 Gt of CO2 currently produced annually by allowing grid energy imbalances to be met by renewable sources as opposed to fossil fuels, equivalent to 10-15% of total emissions in today’s power sector;
  • This level of deployment will require $1.5-3tn of investment, with $50bn needed by 2025.
