Spanish and Cultural Immersion CME at Hospitalito Atitlán

Physicians can improve their Medical Spanish and learn more about Maya customs and culture at Hospitalito Atitlán’s five-day Spanish and Cultural Immersion CME course.
Students will receive one-on-one Medical Spanish instruction. They will learn to perform a variety of medical tasks in Spanish, as well as learn how to better connect with patients from other cultures.

This CME is perfect for people who have mastered basic Spanish communication through study and/or travel and would like to immerse themselves in the language. It also engages students in the Maya experience, helping them to better connect with patients from foreign cultures. Learn more.

New Laparoscopic Tower Donated by Dr. Bjork
& Friends Reduces Invasive Surgeries at HA

General Surgeons Dr. Kevin Bjork and Dawn Stapleton, Urologist Brad Qualey and OB/GYN John McGuiness operated on 83 patients in one week. In addition, Dr. Qualey used GreenLight Laser for 19 prostate operations, relieving these men of a life of permanent catheterization.

Four-Day Dermatology Clinics See 407 Patients

Drs. Invar Braunstein, Rudy Roth, Jules Lipoff & Claudia Paz saw the patients at Hospitalito-organized clinics in San Lucas Tolimán, San Juan la Laguna, Santa Cruz la Laguna, San Antonio Chacaya and Cerro de Oro.  Dr. Roth (University of Pennsylvania) organized the jornada with INDERMA, Guatemala's dermatology institute.

Local Maya Women With Diabetes Learn
How to Manage Their Disease at Monthly Clubs

Diabetes education workshops are underwritten by The World Diabetes Foundation project, Managing Diabetes in Santiago Atitlán. They are presented to local diabetes "clubs" by a collaboration between the Hospitalito and the local government health office, the Centro de Salud (health department).

March CME Class Learns About
HA Procedures with New Babies

The latest Spanish and Cultural Immersion CME class was a great success. On the last day,
students learned the vocabulary for medical equipment and supplies, as well as terms for newborn care.
The attendees included pediatricians, an OB/GYN, nurse midwife and an ER doc, which is why head nurse Chonita Damián Ixbalan chose the topic of birthing for the class.

Hospitalito Atitlán is now offering Continuing Medical Education credits for physicians and nurses who want to learn Medical Spanish. Each course is conducted over one week in beautiful Santiago Atitlán, and physicians and nurses can earn up to 25 CME credits. Courses are scheduled eight times through 2014.
