Students Receive Friend Peace

Eight college and graduate students from around the Pacific, including the Republic of Korea and American Samoa, were recently awarded Richards Friend Peace Scholarships ranging from $5,000 to $13,000. The annual scholarship, administered by the Hawai'i Conference Foundation, was established by Theodore and Mary Atherton Richards to promote peace and friendships in the Pacific region.

 Resource Supports Ministry to Elders

"Age-Friendly Congregations" is a new curriculum from the UCC Council for Health and Human Service Ministries (CHHSM) designed to help congregations strengthen their ministry to older members.

 Study Christian Faith Online

"Resource - We Make the Road by Walking" is a Facebook group that will study a re-introduction to the Christian faith based on the book We Make the Road by Walking. Led by Phyllis Meighen, Director of ReSource for Christian Spirituality, the 52-week program will begin September 4. Watch a video introduction. A Facebook account is needed to join the group.



 O'ahu Association Installs Crossroads Pastor

The O'ahu Association will install David Turner as Pastor of Church of the Crossroads (1212 University Avenue, Honolulu) on Sunday, September 3, at 4 p.m.

 Celebrate Queen Lili'uokalani's Birthday

Various events celebrating the 179th birthday of Queen Lili'uokalani will take place on the 'Iolani Palace grounds on Sunday, September 3, 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. A living history walking tour recounting pivotal moments in the overthrow of the Hawaiian monarchy will be conducted on September 3, 4, 9 and 10. Reservations are required.

 Training Prepares Church Members for Visitations

Making Caring Visits” is a two-session visitation training for lay members and pastors who want to become better prepared to visit church members in hospitals. The sessions will be held September 8-9 and 22-23 at Iao United Church of Christ (2371 W. Vineyard Street, Wailuku). Cost is $60 per person, which includes materials and meals.  Women's Conference Promotes Christian Service

Pearl City Community Church is sponsoring a women's conference to be held on Saturday, September 16, 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., at Pearl Country Club (98-535 Kaonohi Street, Aiea). Guest speaker Carole Kai, a local entertainer and philanthropist, will share about her work and God's call to service. Cost is $40 for adults and $20 for youth ages 12-18 (includes meals and a tote bag). Register by September 3.

 Crossroads Hosts ONA Forum

Learn about being an Open and Affirming (ONA) church at “Creating a Welcoming Church for LGBTQ,” a public forum taking place on October 7 and 14 (10 a.m. to 12 noon) and October 9 (7 p.m. to 9 p.m.) at Church of the Crossroads (1212 University Avenue, Honolulu).  Kawaiaha'o Kahu Retires, Receives Blessing

Curt Kekuna will retire from his position as Senior Pastor (Kahu) of Kawaiaha'o Church (957 Punchbowl Street, Honolulu) on Thursday, August 31. A ho'omaika'i (blessing) for Curt and his wife, Becky, will take place at the church on Wednesday, August 30, at 5:30 p.m.
