June Membership Update... Final President Message

Start of Summer, End of My Term

As I sat down to write my final membership update, I want to express my sincere and honest gratitude to everyone for their commitment and support of WVHIMA. I had set some heroic goals with the Board of Directors this year, and they exceeded all expectations. Let me outline the progress of the goals and accomplishments.

1) Increase communication with the membership using monthly updates with our webmaster.
a. Monthly updates were sent via the webmaster Knowledge Connex of what events were occurring, hot topics, and any action items.
b. Interval notices for registration, events, reminders, etc. were sent in addition to monthly messages.

2) Increase membership participation.
a. Re-implemented the Mentor approach with several new members to work cohesively with the Board.
b. Frequent posts on Twitter, LinkedIn, and Facebook with Hash tag linking: #BeAHIMHero #WVHIMA
c. Started a personal “Get Moving Campaign” by running 5K races
i. Goal was to demonstrate that if I can do it, you younger professionals can definitely can too!
ii. Held our first WVHIMA 5k Race at Oglebay with 27 participants.

3) Increase membership education.
a. Fall Retreat Roadshow was held in September
i. Same speakers and topics
ii. Two locations to meet the needs of the membership
1. Fairmont – Northern location
2. Charleston – Southern location
b. Worked with Knowledge Connex to offer web-recorded sessions as a pilot in
conjunction with other CSAs.
i. No cost to WVHIMA to pilot.
ii. Offered two pre-recorded sessions online.
c. Annual Convention with Heroic topics and speakers.
i. Several unique topics from AHIMA presentation speakers
1. Life on a Ship
2. Active Shooter
3. HIM Topics
a. Information Governance
b. Compliance
c. Legal and Release of Information
ii. Hero Theme convention complete with opportunities to network.
iii. Honored our past, current, and future HIM Heroes.
1. 20 Past Presidents honored at luncheon
2. Distinguished Member Debbie Parenti honored at banquet
3. 4 Scholarship awards presented at banquet

4) Decrease costs where we could to invest more in the membership needs
a. Decommissioned the storage shed to an off-site location at no cost saving storage unit fees.
b. Decommissioned the post office box as all communication now comes via email from AHIMA.
c. Reviewed contents of the Safety Deposit Box.
d. Revamped bookkeeping processes to have monthly meeting for checkbook reconciliation.

At the last board meeting on June 16, we reviewed committee policies and procedures, lessons learned and future improvements to be made. This included the bylaws review, as well as some reflection of a great year by this group. The magnitude of the work accomplished by this group has been outstanding. You should join this group and enjoy the networking and volunteer opportunities as well! Megan will be a great president, and she will appreciate your volunteer support.

As I close my year as President, if you are not aware already, I am running on the AHIMA Ballot for Board of Directors. Trading my mask and cape in for some other wing and a prayer.

WVHIMA has been a great supporter, along with our many vendors and friends. I have a Facebook page, LinkedIn account and Twitter account to post my campaign thoughts and ideas. Many have asked how to support my campaign, and spreading the word is the best campaign method at present, getting my name out there using #VoiceURVote #HIMSocial and #CMetheny4AHIMABOD. So please feel free to check out my flyer, like my Facebook page, follow me on Twitter and LinkedIn, and let our colleagues and other HIM professionals know that I will be their Voice with their vote. The voting period will be July 31 through August 14th.

Finally, THANK YOU! I have enjoyed my presidency (again) representing you at AHIMA meetings, Leadership functions, meeting Senators and Congressmen in Washington DC at Advocacy Day, and celebrating with you at our convention in Oglebay. The convention was so much more than I could ever ask. My family along with my best friends and colleagues were on hand to enjoy the festivities!

I hope this year, you were inspired to wear your hero gear and volunteer!
