Coding Education Alternatives

Submitted by: Laurie Johnson, MS, RHIA, FAHIMA, PHIMA Coding Roundtable Chairperson
There are several valuable resources available on the PHIMA website for coding and documentation. I wanted to call your attention to these low cost on-demand training alternatives:
  • Anatomy & Physiology Refresher Series is a 12-part series that addresses anatomy by body system
  • Clinical Documentation Improvement Series is a three-part series that is designed to provide an overview of CDI; describe a CDI program; and provide methodology for CDI/Coding collaboration.
  • From RUGs to PDPM is a brand new two credit session which prepares the listener for the conversion in the Skilled Nursing Facility reimbursement methodology beginning October 1, 2019.
  • FY19 IPPS Updates and ICD-10-CM/PCS Updates is a two-part session which covers the FY19 Inpatient Prospective Payment System update for the Medicare-Severity Diagnosis Related Groups (MS-DRGs) and the code updates for diagnosis and inpatient procedures.
  • Fine Tuning Your Coding Productivity Tracking and Monitoring Processes is a 1.5-hour session will assist in establishing productivity benchmarks under ICD-10 and provide method to monitor productivity data.
  • ICD-10 and Pharmacology is a three-part series that provides information to the coder regarding various medications and the diseases that are treated by those medications.
  • ICD-10-PCS and Root Operations – this is a twelve-part series that reviews the root operations from a coding and clinical perspective.
These resources are available at the PHIMA website. The topics are available as a single session or as a bundle and are wonderful alternatives for learning about coding and documentation. Please contact me at if you have new topic suggestions.
