AHIMA Leadership Symposium Recap
Submitted by: Margie Stackhouse, RHIA, PHIMA President-Elect
The AHIMA Leadership Symposium held July 14-15, 2017 in Chicago began with a welcome and introduction by AHIMA President/Chair, Ann Chenoweth and AHIMA President/Chair-Elect, Diann Smith. There were representatives from 51 Component State Associations (CSA) in attendance. PHIMA was represented by Chris Parfitt, Laura Rizzo, Sandy Frey and Margie Stackhouse. Jill Clark, AHIMA 1st year Director was in attendance as well. It was a great time to network and share best practices.
The AHIMA Highlights for 2017 presented included the Strategic Objectives:
- Prepare HIM professionals for the future
- Transition HIM professionals to future roles
- AHIMA Foundation Apprenticeship Program which connects prospective HIM professionals with first-time jobs
- Lead in Informatics
- Increase the number of current and new members with informatics as their primary job role
- New certification - Certified Professional in Health Informatics (CPHI)
- Lead in Data Analytics
- Increase the number of current and new member with data analytics as their primary job role
- Champion Information Governance
- Increase IG adoption through the use of AHIMA’s IG Adoption Model (IGAM), tools and expertise
After a morning break we were inspired by two presenters who discussed how to shape the future of healthcare and healthcare from the global perspective. The afternoon began with a panel of three HIM professionals who discussed the changing roles of HIM and how we can think outside of the box.
Breakout sessions in the afternoon included preparation for the CSA treasurers, Board duties, Annual Meeting planning strategies, Member communication (social media, etc.), the Apprenticeship program, student engagement and state advocacy. Lots of wonderful ideas shared and best practices.
Saturday morning started with a legal review to increase awareness and knowledge of the legal relationship between AHIMA and the CSAs. The next session of the morning gave an update of the HIM Reimagined (HIMR) project. The attendees learned that the Commission on Certification for Health Informatics and Information Management (CCHIIM) has approved a proviso that widens the pool of individuals who are eligible to take the RHIA exam. Watch for further information from AHIMA on this fantastic opportunity. The Saturday morning breakout sessions provided opportunities to learn more about the CSA Board functions, responsibilities and best practices.
The Symposium wrapped up with a session on leadership, volunteerism and member engagement. The speaker gave us excellent information on how to be a leader, create excitement for volunteers and increase member engagement.
The AHIMA Leadership Symposium provided us with updates on the AHIMA Strategic Objectives; networking opportunities with the other CSA’s, best practices and time to meet new friends. We all left energized for the upcoming year.
