WHIMA Scholarships


Time is running out to apply for a WHIMA scholarship. WHIMA offers scholarships in the following three categories:
  • Undergraduate Scholarship
  • Karen Kohler Past Presidents Memorial Graduate Scholarship
  • Established Professional Development Scholarship
Amounts awarded will be based on the number of qualified applications received for each scholarship. Individual awards vary.

Applications due Feb. 28, 2019. Recipients will have an opportunity to accept their Scholarship at the WHIMA 2019 Annual Conference in Green Bay.

WHIMA ROI Workshop


You don't want to miss out on this year's Release of Information Workshop! Session highlights include: Privacy and Security, Releasing through Patient Portal, ROI Staff Training, and Recognized Best Practices no matter your setting. The day will wrap up with a Q&A Panel Discussion. This year the Q&A has been extended to two (2) hours! Several ROI vendors will showcase their product/service!

The 2019 ROI Workshop offers education, networking, and an opportunity to earn 6 CEU’s at a reduced registration fee.

Celebrate Health Professionals (HIP) Week, March 24–30!


Prepare for HIP Week Early!

Organize a planning committee by inviting your colleagues to a brainstorming meeting. Encourage collaborative and creative ideas; here are a few to get you started.
  • Promote HIP Week ahead of time through your organization’s intranet site,
    in-house publications, flyers, tent cards, and e-mail messages. 
  • Lunch and Learn—Hold a brown bag lunch and learn for all facility employees, using the PowerPoint presentation found on our website. Use this presentation to educate your workforce and get them excited about celebration. 
  • Conduct Department Tours—Invite visitors and colleagues to explore the HIM department and learn more about the profession. Use staff photos and “tools of the trade” in your facility’s newsletter to get this message across. Invite a vendor to demonstrate high-tech industry advancements. 
  • Display Posters and Flyers promoting HIP Week events in your department, waiting areas, and other  high-traffic locations. 
  • More ideas online!

Flu Season Is Upon Us

The flu is a respiratory illness which can range in severity from mild to severe. It is a highly contagious illness that in some cases may lead to death. The virus is present all year but becomes more prevalent in the United States during the fall and winter seasons. Recent data related to influenza rates demonstrates the importance of complete and accurate documentation, as code assignment is determined from the clinical documentation. The accuracy of code assignment impacts healthcare data surveillance and reporting. Coding professionals should make sure they follow the official coding guidelines when assigning codes.
