PHIMA Scholarship Recipients

This year the PHIMA board was pleased to present two recipients with the 2019 PHIMA Scholarship. The Board awarded a total of $1,500 in scholarship funds to the student winners. The winners are noted below.

Jackmely Hernandez, recipient of the 2019 PHIMA Student Scholarship, is a senior at Peirce College with a double major in Health Information Administration and Medical Coding. In May 2018, she obtained an associate of science degree in Health Information Technology and is currently preparing to take AHIMA’s RHIT and CCS certification exams. She lives in the city with her husband and three children and works for the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia in their surgical billing department. Jackie has served PHIMA as a student liaison this year.

Kathleen Baumer, recipient of the 2019 PHIMA Student Scholarship, is graduating this spring with her associated degree in Health Information Technology from Penn College. She will graduate in the spring of 2020 with her bachelor’s degree in Health Information Management and duel minors in business administration and business management. She has also earned her CCA certification. Kathleen has served PHIMA as a student liaison for two year.

During college, Kathleen was employed at evangelical Community Hospital as a centralized Scheduling Representative. She was also the president of the Health Information Associate (HIA) club at Penn College. After her bachelor’s degree, she plans to pursue her master’s in healthcare administration and Policy as well as become gainfully employed at a healthcare facility in the Hershey/Harrisburg area.

The PHIMA Board is proud to support our future leaders as they continue on the path of success in the Health Information Management field.

PHIMA scholarship awards are funded by member donations through the raffle at the annual conference.  We thank the membership and regional associations for their donations which raised the funds to award annual scholarship winners.
