PHIMA Distinguished Member 2018

JoAnn Avoli, M.Ed., RHIA

PHIMA is proud to honor JoAnn Avoli, M.Ed., RHIA, as its Distinguished Member for 2018.

JoAnn has been employed at the Community College of Allegheny County (CCAC) as a faculty member and Health Information Technology program coordinator for nearly 50 years, starting there in 1969. JoAnn was also an adjunct assistant professor at the University of Pittsburgh teaching medical terminology and medical transcription from 1971 to 1984. She has touched the lives of hundreds of students who have benefited from her knowledge, counseling, and caring support in helping them to secure positions in the HIM field.  Graduates of the CCAC HIT program have successful careers as coders, release of information specialists, registrars, and analysts, thanks to JoAnn’s efforts in helping her students along the path to becoming HIM professionals.

JoAnn has served in many roles for the Western Pennsylvania Health Information Management Association (WPHIMA) including President, Vice-President, Director, Secretary, and Education Committee Chair. She also served PHIMA as Director, Delegate, Public Relations Chair and was a member of several committees. JoAnn is an RHIA and has maintained her AHIMA membership for the duration of her career. She has also attended many educational sessions sponsored by AHIMA’s Assembly on Education to enhance her teaching skills.

JoAnn is highly regarded by the faculty and staff at CCAC. In 2002, she was one of the faculty members nominated by CCAC’s Allegheny Campus and then selected by them for the Teaching Excellence Award from the National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development, a membership organization committed to promoting and celebrating excellence in teaching, learning and leadership at community and technical colleges.

JoAnn is a graduate of Carlow University (formerly Mount Mercy College) and earned her Master of Education degree from the University of Pittsburgh.

We congratulate and thank JoAnn for her long-exemplified commitment to the HIM profession through her volunteer service and for her role as an educator and mentor.
