MSHIMA e-News

September 2018

President's Message

Hi Everyone. I hope you are all doing well this September day. As we have stated in the past, we are very interested in having new volunteers for the MSHIMA Board and committees. Some of you did give me your contact information and I had that stored in my phone. Well my phone took a ride on top of my car and landed in the middle of I10 recently! To say the least, any information I had in my possession has become unavailable. With that being said, we do have some volunteer opportunities for our membership and we ask that you please contact Ryan Kelly at mshima@mshima.org to volunteer for one of the many available roles.

Something that is very dear to my heart is our outreach to HIM students and high school students to promote the HIM profession. We are looking for HIM professionals to help us reach this population. This may include volunteers speaking at local schools. We would like to encourage HIM students and stress the value of obtaining their AHIMA credential after graduation. We find that many students do not sit for their exams, or if they are not successful the first time they do not try again. We want them to know the value of having their credential and how important that is for our profession.

Reaching out to high school students is also a very important part of growing our profession. We would like HIM professionals to talk to this particular population and show them the opportunities awaiting them. We feel if we can show them the many opportunities our profession has available, we will be able to bring new and innovative ideas into HIM.

As we talked in the last newsletter, we will be attending House of Delegates in Miami this week. We always ask that if you have concerns or questions to please reach out to us.

Thank you so much for allowing us to represent the MSHIMA membership and to help make decisions for our profession. I hope you all have a blessed month.

Thank you

Lorie B Mills, RHIT, CCS
President

CMS proposes nixing pain-management questions from HCAHPS in response to opioid epidemic

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services is planning to eliminate a set of questions on pain management from its nationwide patient experience survey, just months after rolling out updates to the questions.

The changes to Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) are part of its proposed Outpatient Prospective Payment System (OPPS) update (PDF) for this year. CMS said that it's looking to cut the questions as part of its response to the opioid epidemic, following recommendations from the White House's commission on the matter.

The questions ask patients if they experienced pain during a hospital stay and if they felt the care team communicated with them adequately about it. Prior to this year, the survey instead asked patients if they believed their pain was effectively controlled. The first surveys with the updated questions were issued in January, but the changes were approved in 2016.

New Medicare Card – Progress Updates

CMS continues to successfully mail newly-designed Medicare cards with the new Medicare number and we are excited to share important progress updates with you.

As of August 31, CMS mailed nearly 35 million cards and continue to mail more every day. They are processing claims and eligibility requests with the Medicare Beneficiary Identifier (MBI), showing that providers are successfully using the new number.

Medicare is on track to deliver all cards before April 2019. With their ongoing focus on fraud and protecting the identities of people with Medicare, they are continuously adjusting and improving our mailing strategy to make sure they are mailing new cards to accurate addresses and using the highest levels of fraud protection throughout the mailing.

If your Medicare patients say they did not get a card after their mailing wave ends, ask them to call 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227) where we can verify their identity, check their address, and help them get their new card.
