December 2018

President's Message

MERRY CHRISTMAS!!! I hope you all are having a wonderful December.  As this year comes to a close, we can look back with a sense of accomplishment and face the new year with a sense of excitement and determination. There have been many changes this year within AHIMA and some that still remain uncertain. As always, we will face these changes together and do what we as an association feel is best for our profession. I would like to invite you to join the MSHIMA advocacy group in Jackson on January 17th at 8 a.m. for MSHIMA Hill Day, held at the Mississippi State Capitol Building. MSHIMA has worked with MHA and the Revenue Roundtable to back a bill being presented to the Legislature for consideration on payer practices. We will be meeting with legislators on this day to discuss the need for payer reform in our industry. If you would like to participate in this event, please contact Ryan Kelly at mshima@mshima.org to make those arrangements.

AHIMA is calling for volunteers at the national level. Please visit ahima.org to see what opportunities await you in the upcoming year.

We are in the process of having six on-demand webinars available on mshima.org. We have partnered with FairCode to make these available at a very reasonable fee. CEUs will also be available for each webinar.

We are currently working on our state convention that will be held in Jackson on June 12-14, 2019 at the Jackson Marriott downtown. We hope you will make plans to attend. Again, I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. We are so lucky to have such a wonderful group of professionals in our state. Thank you all for your contribution to our industry.

Lorie B Mills, RHIT, CCS
President

Hinds Community College will offer two online continuing education courses in the spring semester: ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS. Each course lasts 12 weeks. It is only recommended to take one course at time. These courses are offered as online continuing education for graduates of the Health Information Technology program and/or graduates of other CAHIIM Accredited HIT/HIM programs.

The courses will be taught by an AHIMA Certified ICD-10 Trainer. Students will have to provide their own current edition ICD-10 coding books or they may use the electronic files available in the course resources. Classes start February 4, 2019.

Total cost is $255 for each course. A payment plan can be set up if you are registered by January 15, 2019.

Most hospitals still use mail or fax to exchange data

Health systems use numerous methods to exchange patient medical records, but providers continue to rely heavily on the old-fashioned approach of mail or fax, according to new federal data on interoperability.

Nearly three-quarters of non-federal acute care hospitals routinely use fax or mail to receive summary of care records from providers outside their system, according to new data released by the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT. Two-thirds of health systems use fax or mail to send records.

Paper-based methods outpaced electronic transmission, particularly in receiving records. More than 4 in 10 systems said they “often” use mail or fax while 27% said they often use a standalone health information service provider like DirectTrust.
