Maryland surgeons made quite a showing at the recent Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma (EAST) meeting in January in Orlando, FL. In addition to numerous scientific presentations from surgeons representing institutions across the state, two local surgeons received prestigious awards.

Colonel Raymond Fang, MD, FACS, recent Director of the U.S. Air Force Center for Sustainment of Trauma and Readiness Skills (C-STARS)-Baltimore (based at Shock Trauma) and the new trauma director at Johns Hopkins Bayview Hospital was awarded the John P. Pryor Distinguished Service Award. This award commemorating Dr. Pryor, a trauma surgeon who was killed in action while deployed in Iraq, is given to an EAST member who has distinguished themselves in the field of military casualty care. Christian D. Jones, MD, FACS, an acute care surgeon at The Johns Hopkins Hospital, was the recipient of this year's Presidential Distinguished Service Award for his role in developing the EAST online Twitter-based Journal club.

Four Maryland trauma surgeons currently have EAST leadership roles. Elliott R. Haut, MD, PhD, FACS is the newly named President-elect. Deborah Stein, MD, MPH, FACS is the newly appointed Secretary. William Chiu, MD, FACS, FCCM remains a Director- at-large. Joseph V. Sakran, MD, MPH, MPA, FACS was selected Chair of the Injury Control and Violence Prevention Committee. Take Survey on Value and Future of Continuing Certification

Continuing Board Certification: Vision for the Future, a commission convened by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS), is seeking feedback regarding the current and future state of continuing board certification. The "Vision Initiative" survey is available on the commission website, open to comment from physicians and other healthcare professionals.

The commission brings together multiple stakeholders to envision a system that is responsive to the needs of those who rely on it and that is relevant, meaningful, and of value to physicians.

The survey will be open until May 11. The ABMS encourages sharing this link with your colleagues and organizations.
