President's Message

Good Day Everyone!!

I hope you are have a great year so far. We have many moving parts right now in our association and it is a great time to be a part of the new changes. AHIMA recently announced its new vision and mission, and we are embracing it with excitement. I hope the new path will lead to a revitalization of AHIMA and engage our membership for the future.

It is that time of year for award nominations. Many times the only submissions that we have are from Board Members. I believe many deserving people miss out on the recognition they deserve because no one takes the time to honor them with a submission. All of the information you need in order to complete a submission can be found on the MSHIMA website as well as in this newsletter, or you can simply click here.

Several of the HIM educators and HIM industry leaders in Mississippi met recently at Mississippi State University to work on a curriculum for an HIT program to be introduced in the high school setting. We believe this will help to propel the interest of many young people into our field. We believe that we created a well-rounded overview of what HIT is and the many career paths it can afford to graduates. The program will be voluntary for school districts, but we will be working with them to understand the benefits of offering this to their students. There is also a need for instructors in this endeavor. If this is something you would consider as a possible career change, please reach out to us.

We are putting the finishing touches on the state meeting. Please visit the website for the agenda and registration. Please go ahead and register so we can prepare for meals and breaks.

Have a blessed month and reach out to us if you have any needs.

Lorie B Mills, RHIT, CCS
President

Death by A Thousand Clicks: Where Electronic Health Records Went Wrong

Electronic health records were supposed to do a lot: make medicine safer, bring higher-quality care, empower patients, and yes, even save money. Boosters heralded an age when researchers could harness the big data within to reveal the most effective treatments for disease and sharply reduce medical errors. Patients, in turn, would have truly portable health records, being able to share their medical histories in a flash with doctors and hospitals anywhere in the country—essential when life-and-death decisions are being made in the ER.
