PHIMA at PSCA (PA School Counselors’ Association) Conference
Submitted by: Lisa Hershey, RHIA, CHDA - PHIMA Second Year Director
On November 29 – 30, I represented PHIMA at the PSCA Conference Exhibit Hall. Our booth included promotional materials from AHIMA and almost all accredited HIM education programs in the state, including Associates, Bachelors and Masters programs.
There were over 350 Guidance Counselors attending the conference. They begin career education as early as elementary students so many counselors were interested in learning more about the Health Information Management (HIM) career. Most high school counselors were aware of HIM as a career but did indicate that it is often a difficult career path to “sell” to high school students.
More than one counselor asked if we have speakers who would be willing to come and speak at their career fairs. I was able to give them Linda McLinden’s contact information, so they could reach out for available speakers from PHIMA.
If you have a contact at your local high school, I would encourage you to offer your time to promote this viable career path at a career fair or other opportunity within the school district. PHIMA can connect you with resources to utilize in any career promotion activities and we have a link on PHIMA’s website to AHIMA’s career center.
