AHIMA House of Delegates Meeting

Nearly 200 of the AHIMA House of Delegates (HoD) met for our Annual Meeting, September 23 in Miami, FL. As delegates, we serve as a liaison between PHIMA and AHIMA. The 2018 Speaker of the House is Catherine Porto, MPA, RHIA, CHP, FAHIMA and our Speaker-Elect is Shawn Wells, RHIT, CHDA.

The Speaker of the House, Catherine Porto, MPA, RHIA, CHP, FAHIMA, kicked off the meeting by welcoming guests to Florida and thanked FHIMA for hosting the House Meeting. AHIMA President/Chair, Diann Smith, MS, RHIA, CHP, FAHIMA, and AHIMA CEO, Wylecia Wiggs Harris, Ph.D., CAE, provided the AHIMA update and reviewed plans for the Association’s strategic reset to renew the organization and move AHIMA to an innovative state. Council reports were presented, and the Old Business of Leadership Development was reviewed. The House then voted on the revisions to the House Policy & Procedure Manual, which were unanimously passed.
Guest speaker, Susan Parker, MEd, RHIA, FAHIMA discussed the work of the House governing the profession and kicked off the discussion of the breakout sessions. Attendees divided into four breakout sessions which covered the topics of Environmental Scanning, HIM Reimagined, House Apportionment and Professional Relevancy. A tremendous amount of work was accomplished as the delegates engaged in discussion and sharing of ideas.  Each breakout group developed recommendations, which were then shared with the entire House for further discussion and comment. Under New Business, the House was polled on their preference on apportionment or the method in which the number of delegates for each state is determined. Most delegates were in favor of no change to the current apportionment model. It was also suggested that we continue a task force to further address relevancy.

The meeting closed with ILHIMA President, Tricia Truscott, inviting the House to Chicago for the 2019 AHIMA annual conference.
