Presidential Welcome

Submitted by: Margie Stackhouse, RHIA

Hello PHIMA! Welcome to PHIMA’s 82nd year. I am so honored to continue as your President for the upcoming year. I anticipate an exciting year of education, networking and fun.

I enjoyed meeting many of you at the PHIMA Annual Conference at the Penn Stater in May. We recognized the first-time attendees with a star on their badge and I want to thank all the members who helped orient them to the conference. The new Board was installed and we are busy making plans for the Fall Leadership Conference, education sessions and planning for the April 2020 Annual Conference.

One thing I have learned about HIM professionals is that we are very good at adapting to change. AHIMA is continuing through their transformation process this year and are updating the 2020-2023 strategic plan. When I think of a transformation process, I think of the life cycle of the caterpillar to butterfly. AHIMA, PHIMA, our regional associations and all our members will be going through the process together. I am sure we will all come out as beautiful butterflies. The PHIMA Board will be working to update our strategic plan to be in conjunction with AHIMA. There will be more updates after the July Leadership Symposium. Stay tuned.

The AHIMA initiatives include coding and CDI, along with flexibility for the states to customize the plans for their members. Many of the previous initiatives such as data analytics will continue. Since this will be a year of transformation, I have decided that my theme for this year will be Change, Transformation, Success.

We need to prepare the future of the HIM profession and mentor new and existing members. Don’t be afraid to acquire new skills, plan for your future and network to find new opportunities. Spread your butterfly wings and achieve what you want in your career.

Please mark your calendars for the Fall Conference on November 8, 2019 in Mechanicsburg, PA. The PHIMA Annual Conference will be April 27-28, 2020 at the Wyndham Lancaster Resort.

Thank you for the opportunity to serve as your President and look forward to seeing you at future meetings.
