PHIMA Fall Conference Recap

We had a great turnout for our PHIMA Fall Conference, Advancing Information Governance through Compliance, Privacy & Security, and Analytics, held in Mechanicsburg, PA with 43 attendees’! Ann Meehan, RHIA, Director, IG AHIMA IGAdvisors was our presenter.

Ann introduced Information Governance (IG) and how to engage leaders across the continuum. Ann started the day with defining IG as “An organization-wide framework for managing information throughout its lifecycle and for supporting the organization’s strategy, operations, regulatory, legal, risk, and environmental requirements.” Having an IG program allows the organizations to more broadly focus on outputs vs. inputs, as Data Governance does. IG focus is on creating, managing, exchanging, preserving and disclosing of information.

When making a case for IG, organizations need to look at their challenges such as value-based payments, cybersecurity, telemedicine, information management of an EHR, patient identification and test result reporting and follow-up. If the information contained within the record is not unique and accurate to the patient, many mishaps could occur, causing patient safety risk and financial losses.

Ann also described how the 21st Century Cures Act, Title 4 Access is shaping the future of IG. The Act allows for several different initiatives, for example, leveraging the EHR to improve patient care, empowering patients to access their health information, interoperability, transparent reporting and assisting providers and organizations to improve the quality of care for patient.

When starting to build your IG program you need to look at areas that address data and information. Some organizations probably have started the path with initiatives such as Master Patient Index clean up, record retention and destruction policies, and contract management. To broaden this and involve your C-suite, tie this back to IG while identifying gaps. Utilizing IGHealthRate will allow an organization to assess their IG maturity.

For more information, please visit http://www.IGIQ.org/ This site tests your IQ on Information Governance and provides some wonderful resources such as the IGIQ Blog, an interactive video for healthcare executives, IG Adoption Model (which has 80 maturity markers to gage readiness), Information Governance Toolkit 3.0, and IGHealthRate.

To leave you with a quote from Ann, “Without information we can’t make decisions.”
