Issue 63 – Spring 2019

Inside this Issue:

President’s Message

Greetings One and All,

Nice to know spring is around the corner, and there are pleasant expectations for the months to come. As we look back over the last quarter, there has been a substantial change within MdHIMA; our President Godwin Okafor, ascended to the national board of AHIMA and we are proud that he is representing MdHIMA on the AHIMA Board as a Director.

The winter weather conditions in January and February did not hamper the objectives of the Association as a successful Advocacy Day was held on January 29, 2019 in Annapolis, MD at the Maryland State House and members of MdHIMA had the opportunity to meet with state leaders that represent our MdHIMA members. On February 2nd, 2019 the Quarterly Business Meeting was well attended from members across Maryland. A delegation from MdHIMA is looking forward to meeting on Capitol Hill, March 25- 26, 2019 for Advocacy Day with our peers and leaders from AHIMA.

Anticipation and excitement are palpable for the combined 2019 Annual Meeting with DCHIMA. The meeting will be held April 17th and 18th at the Royal Sonesta in Baltimore. There will be great speakers, informative educational tracks, vendor exhibits and the President’s celebration on the Spirit of Baltimore. Looking forward to seeing everyone there. Thank you to the members that volunteer and donate their time and effort on behalf of MDHIMA affairs. Your hard work and dedication is greatly appreciated. Please volunteer with our association. MdHIMA success begins with YOU!

Sincerely,

Linda Williams, MS, RHIA
2019 MdHIMA President

MdHIMA/DCHIMA 2019 Annual Meeting

The Annual Meeting Committee has been hard at work to prepare a memorable two-day educational event on April 17th and 18th at the Royal Sonesta in Baltimore. We are fortunate to partner once again with DCHIMA and have many distinguished speakers along with a new refreshing Motivational Speaker. The event will include topics ranging from: Senator Shirley Nathan-Pulliam's Legislative Update, AHIMA's 2019 Update, and topics that cover Artificial Intelligence/CDI, What's Your Plan- 2030 Vision, along with Coding Roundtable break-out sessions and more. We will have the presentation for our Distinguished Member Award, Volunteer of the Year Award and two Student Scholarships. Stop by to review the Student Poster Boards, buy something from the Silent Auction, and enjoy learning more from our Vendor Partners and their Exhibits (for two days!). This year, our President's Reception will be a cruise on the Spirit of Baltimore that is bound to delight you with majestic views of the inner harbor and beyond.

CCHIIM Update on HIM Reimagined Certification Recommendation

At this time, the Commission on Certification for Health Informatics and Information Management (CCHIIM) has elected not to move forward with the HIM Reimagined (HIMR) recommendation for the RHIT+ certification.

CCHIIM understands that there is more than one way to designate specialty knowledge, such as through micro-credentialing or certificates instead of certifications. For this reason, and as a result of the concerns voiced by AHIMA members about a potential change to the existing RHIT certification, CCHIIM reached the conclusion to not move in the direction of the RHIT+ specialty credential.

CCHIIM's responsibility is to conduct the necessary research to validate all AHIMA certifications for the purpose of maintaining the highest industry standards related to our certifications. On an ongoing basis, CCHIIM will explore new and emerging ways, along with the traditional job analysis, to designate skills and knowledge for not only the RHIT, but for all AHIMA certifications.

Data Quality Committee

HSCRC had their annual data quality meeting at MHA in February. Some highlights included discussions about grouper changes, coding quality audits, data repository and additional workgroups. There was an extension until July 1, 2019 for the implementation by CMS on outpatient encounters.

March 28, 2019 Up Coming Coding roundtable - This roundtable is geared towards outpatient services. There will be a discussion and presentation on NCCI modifier usage and wound clinic services. We need questions and case examples for the session. Please submit to Brenda at Watson.manor@comcast.net. Celebrate HIP week by networking at the roundtable!

The Data Quality committee has been working with the Annual Meeting committee on the “Day 2” agenda. Please check out the Annual Meeting agenda. We are very excited to be able to get such great speakers that will provide our members with a lot of knowledge. We will also be hosting a coding roundtable at the annual meeting to answer questions from member coders. The roundtable will have facilitators for inpatient and outpatient breakout groups.

Upcoming Coding Roundtable: Month TBD. Will have an HSCRC focus entitled HSCRC Workshop that will address: Overview of HSCRC, Quality Program and Case Mix updates.

General Issues and Discussion: This month we did not have any issues submitted due to reviewing the details of the HSCRC Case Mix Data Quality meeting.

Bylaws/Policy & Procedures Committee

Over the past year, the Bylaws Committee and other members of the MdHIMA Board of Directors conducted a thorough review of the current Bylaws to identify gaps, inconsistencies, and out-of-date information. Proposed revisions to the Bylaws have been completed and summarized. Keep an eye out for a future eBlast, which will have links to the proposed Bylaws and a summary of the amendments. Mark your calendars for March 22 or March 28 for two noon webinars being offered to MdHIMA members to review the proposed revisions and provide an opportunity to ask questions. We would welcome your participation in this important effort.

The HIP professionals work in many capacities and provide many functions working in the health care system, to ensure patients’ data is handled with utmost confidentiality. HIP professionals are making a difference in the healthcare system. There are many professions that a student can pursue in the HIM profession. Let’s make the public aware of the many HIM professions and the roles they play in healthcare. Prepare for #HIPWeek19 with AHIMA resources! Visit www.ahima.org/hipweek.
