AUGUST is El Comité de Longmont Month in Longmont! "In recognition of their 40-years of service to the Longmont community, Longmont Mayor Brian Bagley has proclaimed August as El Comité de Longmont month in the city.
Susie Hidalgo-Fahring, Longmont's first Latina city council member and liaison to the El Comité governing board, requested the creation of the proclamation and was instrumental in Colorado Governor Jared Polis' recent statewide proclamation recognizing the organization's founding members Marta Moreno and Victor Vela." YESTERDAY, Marta Moreno and Victor Vela were presented with a Colorado flag and a United States flag, which had been flown over the Colorado State Capitol, in honor of their 40 years of dedicated — and ongoing (!) — service to the Longmont community and the state of Colorado. State Representative Jonathan Singer, and City Council member Susie Hidalgo-Fahring presented the flags and the signed proclamations to Marta and Vic at Collyer Park yesterday. Read about the event and El Comité's origins, here. See the Governor's proclamation, here. See the Mayor's proclamation, here.
AND, LIFE SHOWS US THE NEED for the work of El Comité, Longmont community activists, and warriors: Days earlier, a young Honduran man, Jorge Rodriguez, was the victim of a violent, racist attack near Garden Acres Park in Longmont, requiring hospital treatment, future eye surgery (he has lost vision in one eye), as well as damage to his work truck. A police report was filed, but Jorge's friend, Jackie Torres, did not believe the case was receiving the attention it deserved. Within hours, Longmont community advocates, CIRC (Colorado Immigrant Rights Coalition), elected leaders, city employees, volunteers and activists sprang into action. Sonia Marquez, Angel Sanchez and Marta Moreno were critical in this effort. A suspect has been identified. Watch a Denver7 report on the attack, here. A GoFundMe account has been set up for Jorge, here.
TODAY, SATURDAY & ANY DAY: Longmont Leads with Love Weekly Vigil, Saturdays, 1–2pm, 6th and Main. THEN, Black Lives Matter Support Vigil, same location, 3pm! Today's vigil focus is "Justice for Jorge" (see info, above). When vigiling, to protect everyone’s health, please remember to wear a mask, maintain 6-foot social distancing, and be sure that no group is larger than 10 people. During Covid-19, the Longmont Leads with Love events have become a “rolling vigil”. No need to wait until Saturday at 1pm. Just go to 6th & Main whenever you can, for as long as you like. Carry your own message to the community in this hour of our nation’s desperate need and tremendous opportunity. You can still vigil at home too: stand in front of your home with the sign you would have brought to Main Street—or put the sign on your lawn or in your window — then take a picture and share it on social media!

KEEP DEMANDING THAT MITCH MCCONNELL TAKE THE HEROES ACT TO A VOTE IN THE SENATE! The republicans have got nothin'! (including unconstitutional executive orders slapped together by trump, who doesn't realize you need CONGRESS to approve FUNDING...) THE HOUSE PASSED the HEROES ACT MONTHS AGO. (It's called, "DOING YOUR JOB!")
Here's a chilling comparison (we think they should have called their plan the "HEELS Act"):
And here's EVEN MORE of what the HEROES Act would accomplish:
- $4 billion in election funding to expand vote by mail and maintain safe in-person voting locations,
- Any eligible voter in any state can request mail-in ballot for any reason, and can request it online
- Bans states from throwing out ballots without giving the voter the opportunity to fix discrepancies
- Requires mail-in ballots to include pre-paid postage
- Same-day and online voter registration
- Extended early voting days
- Safety measures for in-person voting, including protective gear for poll workers
- $25 billion in funding for the United States Postal Service!

Senator Cory Gardner (R): 202-224-5941 (DC)

MORE WAYS to PROTECT THE US POSTAL SERVICE!
1. BUY STAMPS at store.usps.com If you haven't, BUY STAMPS. If you have BUY STAMPS AGAIN...
"Because it's an institution that has a long history of service to our country. We can't let a petty beef with someone stop an organization that employs thousands of veterans and others. It's not a political organization. It's needed by millions of people!" — votevets.org
DID YOU KNOW?: the Postal Service remains a critical source of good jobs for African Americans. Black employees make up 28.6% of the postal workforce — more than double their share of the U.S. population.
2. Text "usps" to 50409, text "Senators" and demand they pass the HEROES ACT IMMEDIATELY, without watering it down! The HEROES Act provides $25 billion in funding for the United States Postal Service!
DID YOU KNOW?: In 2006, Congress passed a law that imposed extraordinary costs on the U.S. Postal Service. The Postal Accountability and Enhancement Act (PAEA) required the USPS to create a $72 billion fund to pay for the cost of its post-retirement health care costs, 75 years into the future (meaning pensions are funded for future postal employees who aren't even born yet.) This burden applies to no other federal agency or private corporation, and there are better ways to fund pensions without crippling the USPS! HOW TO FIX IT, here.
3. FROM MOVEON.ORG — text MAIL to 668356 to demand full Postal Service funding!
DID YOU KNOW that the USPS employs over 100,000 VETERANS — the single largest employer of veterans?
"As a USMC Combat Veteran, I relied on the USPS when I was in Iraq to communicate with my family. This is an American institution that must be supported — way before any corporate bailouts. Either Trump admits that he’s gaslighting Veterans into thinking he supports us, or he puts (our) money where his mouth is." — votevets.org
4. PUSH FOR MORE BALLOT DROP BOXES — the deadline for Colorado County Clerks to request more Ballot Drop Boxes from the Colorado Secretary of State's office is NEXT WEEK! If you know someone who lives in a "ballot box challenged" Colorado County, urge them to contact their County Clerk!
5. SIGN PETITIONS in support of the USPS. There are many:

URGENT DETENTION CENTER ACTION, UPDATE: The (now) 8 immigrant detainees are NOW ON A HUNGER STRIKE! "The men have been held in the medium-security area of the jail since July 11, when they were moved without apparent explanation from the Contract Detention Facility in Aurora. The detainees are demanding to be returned to the Aurora center, said Carolyn Jennings, a volunteer with Casa de Paz, or House of Peace. The Denver organization provides jail visits, transportation, emotional support and other services to immigrants locked in detention and their families...the detainees want to go back to the other location because they have been subject to racist remarks, obscenities, threats of physical violence and what they say are difficult conditions including inedible food." More about the hunger strike and conditions, here. CONTINUE TO ADVOCATE FOR THEIR RETURN from Teller County Jail BACK to ICE-GEO detention facility (Aurora).

ONGOING ACTION ITEMS: As of today, Longmont has a response rate of 72.6% The Census deadline has been CUT SHORT by a month, to September 30! (Read or listen to an NPR report, here.) If just 100 residents are missed, Longmont could lose almost $1.5 million of dollars in federal funding! CENSUS TAKERS HAVE STARTED HOME VISITS IN LONGMONT! Don't put them at unnecessary risk, so be sure to ask everyone you know whether they've responded yet.

80 Days until November 3, BUT Ballots drop in Boulder County starting October 9 — that's 55 days from now.
AUGUST: MAKE A PLAN. What will you be doing besides voting & voting your entire ballot BLUE, in the days before Nov. 3? Rally your friends and neighbors to GOTV. CHECK YOUR VOTER REGISTRATION NOW, here, and urge others to do the same, no matter where they live. CONTACT your Precinct Leader, and see all your district info, here. ENCOURAGE other "ballot drop box challenged" Colorado counties to contact their County Clerk to ensure they have enough ballot drop boxes. BOOKMARK the Boulder County Clerk's elections page, here.
SEPTEMBER: The Boulder County Democratic Party (BCDP) — that's where the precinct leader system is housed and supported — in 2018, was directly responsible for the second highest voter turnout of the over 3,000 counties in the United States! Why? Because of the robust and unprecedented BCDP network of dedicated Precinct Leaders and volunteers. ALSO, because of the familiar and informative BCDP Voter Guide, which has been dropped at up to 90,000 doors by those Precinct Leaders and volunteers all over Boulder County since 2008 (not to be confused with the Secretary of State "Blue Book"). This year, due to pandemic protocol, the BCDP is rightly concerned with the safety of its volunteers and Boulder County voters, so the 2020 BCDP Voter Guide will be offered primarily online at bocovoter.org (the site is under construction as we speak. The BCDP Executive Committee will be voting on ballot issue recommendations in September). The BCDPs task in September is getting as many voters as possible to know about AND USE the 2020 BCDP Voter Guide. This will be done with an "opt-in" program via email, then a massive texting followup effort (NOTE: you will most likely be bombarded with texts this election season. PLEASE save all texts from the BCDP! Also a very good idea to sign up for Ballot Track if you haven't already, here.) For those that have no or limited internet access, it is VITAL that those that DO, SHARE any access to the 2020 BCDP Voter Guide. Think about your neighbors that might need your help navigating their ballot. One phone call, or a zoom chat can make a huge difference! There will be limited, printed 2020 BCDP Voter Guides available. The BCDP will mail a portion of those, and will also have printed guides dropped at stores and community locations.

2020 ballot items...
(We will be covering all ballot items in our September and October LAD meetings. The following is NOT a complete list!)
VOTE YES on the Colorado Families First Paid Family Leave!: EIGHTY PERCENT of Coloradans don’t have access to paid family and medical leave, and cannot afford to take time off work to care for a newborn baby or a seriously ill loved one — something that’s needed now, more than ever! More info, sign up for updates, at coloradofamiliesfirst.org
THE NATIONAL POPULAR VOTE COMPACT will be on your ballot THIS FALL! Yes, our legislature passed the NPV last year, but yes, republicans and anti-vote activists collected enough signatures last summer to place it on the ballot. Continue to generate support for VOTING YES on the NPV — ONE PERSON, ONE VOTE by going to coloradonpv.org — learning all about the NPV, signing up for their newsletters (scroll to the bottom), to volunteer, or donating!
SAY NO TO PROP 115: Proposition 115 is part of a coordinated effort to ban abortion across the country. Health needs should drive important medical decisions—not politics. Help ensure Colorado remains a safe state for abortion care. More info, sign up for updates, at voteno115.org
Have you heard of the Gallagher amendment? If not, you will. Its repeal will be on the ballot this November. We’ll bring you more info about it at future meetings. READ: "Coloradans will vote on Gallagher Amendment repeal in November”, Denver Post, 6/12/2020, here.

National Organization for Women (NOW) is officially recognizing that the fight for the right for women to vote (100 years ago this year) did not guarantee that right to ALL women. And as we know, the white and elite women’s suffrage movement even banned African American women from participation — even though many still valiantly fought in other, important ways. In this NOW series, they are profiling individual women of color pioneers on social media, one a day until August 26. Go to www.now.org/100 for more info. More Sisters in Suffrage, here.
