March 13, 2020
Earlier today the President declared a national emergency related to the COVID-19 virus crisis.
Governor Pritzker announced today that all K-12 schools, public and private, in Illinois will be closed from Tuesday, March 17, through Monday, March 30. I will share information as CPS officials work to identify contingency plans for issues many parents are concerned about, including ensuring access to meals for students and childcare options during this closure.
The Governor plans to hold daily press conferences to provide updates at 2:30pm on Saturday and Sunday this weekend. These press conferences can be viewed on the State of Illinois Website.
As our community works together to support each other during this challenging time, my office is working with block clubs, places of worship, and other community partners to develop a community response plan. If you would like to stay connected and volunteer to check in on homebound and elderly neighbors, please sign up for our 48th Ward Community Response Team. We have created a page on our website -- 48thward.org/coronavirus -- to share local information about how to help neighbors. This page will be updated as more community supports are developed.
I still encourage you to visit the CDPH website -- chicago.gov/coronavirus -- to get the most up to date information and guidance about COVID-19.
I will continue to share updates with you as they are available. Please follow recommendations to maintain social distance, wash hands and sanitize high touch surfaces, and to stay home if you are not feeling well. We are all in this together and we will get through this difficult time as a community.
Alderman, 48th Ward
