The Same Company Investigated Navy Yard Shooter and Edward Snowden for Security Clearance

The company that investigated Navy Yard shooter, Aaron Alexis for his security clearance, also did a 2011 follow-up investigation of Edward Snowden, the former NSA systems analyst who leaked documents about the National Security Agency.  The company, USIS, is under a federal investigation into possible criminal violations involving its oversight of background checks, the AP reported in July.  Alexis’ employer said it had had no personnel problems with him and two separate background checks revealed only a traffic violation.  But there were trouble signs below the surface.  Public records databases used in those kinds of searches can be spotty repositories of arrest records, court dockets and other information.   The checks missed two incidents, one in which Alexis was arrested on suspicion of discharging a firearm within city limits and another for shooting the tires of another man’s vehicle.

E-verify Unavailable Due to the Federal Government Shutdown
E-Verify, the online system that enables companies to check the immigration status of potential workers, has been temporarily shuttered as the first government shutdown in nearly two decades went into effect.
E-Verify was just one of many agencies and programs that shut down their websites and put much of their staff on furlough while a budget impasse continues in Washington.
