Lumina's Movers & Shakers Report

Double dip recession or not, the pace of new appointments continues unabated, as our latest report demonstrates.
Our Annual HR Forum, held in February, proved to be a big hit with delegates attending. One of the ‘hot topics’ covered was the emerging law in Social Media given by our good friends at Lewis Silkin (Solicitors) who also sponsored our event. We have summarised the presentation here and we plan to cover this topic in a future discussion on our Linked In Group. Feel free to join in the debate.

Movers & Shakers of the Month

David Brook 

Group Strategic Marketing Director

Studio 1+1

After an extensive international search by Lumina, we are pleased to announce that Ukrainian broadcaster 1+1 has hired seasoned UK TV executive David Brook as its Group Strategic Marketing Director. Studio 1+1 was founded in August 1995 and was previously part of the CME Group but has since gone private and is now a leading broadcaster in the Ukraine. The Group consists of 4 separate Channels including the market leader: 1 + 1, publishing and production interests.  
Brook has worked at Channel 4 and Channel 5 in the UK and more recently at Scottish broadcaster STV working directly for the CEO. At 1+1 he will be responsible for developing and maintaining the broadcaster’s channel brands. He will be based in Kiev.  


Scott Jackson

Lumina is also pleased to announce that Scott Jackson has joined ON24 as Director of Production for EMEA and APAC. With its headquarters in the US, ON24 provide cloud-based webcasting and virtual communications solutions that help organisations to communicate with employees, clients, prospects and partners across the globe.
He comes from a dynamic broadcast and digital background having worked with the London Stock Exchange and markettiers4dc supporting numerous Fortune1000 clients all over the world.
Scott will manage the strategic growth, direction and production delivery across EMEA and APAC for ON24.

This year’s MIPTV was noticeably quieter than usual with some Hollywood studios making major cutbacks in attendance to the market due to it’s proximity to the May screenings. However there were still lots of deals being announced and the official numbers were 11,000 people registered, meaning it’s a big market all the same. 
Our analysis of news stories revealed that about 10% were related to new media of some kind. So while online, on demand and mobile create the biggest buzz the actual volume of deals right now is less of significance.
A real impact in the UK has come from the entrance of Netflix. Competition for SVOD rights with Lovefilm has forced up prices considerably and has created a new second pay window. Studios, in particular, have been very busy selling more content and look forward, perhaps over optimistically, to competition with Sky for 1st pay rights. And LoveFilm owner Amazon told delegates to “stay tuned” for future launches beyond UK, Germany and Scandinavia where it currently operates...

Social Media in the Workplace: The Emerging Law

 ‘Social Media in the workplace’ was one of the ‘hot’ topics in this year’s HR Seminar.
Presented by Richard Miskella from Law Firm Lewis Silkin, this presentation covered the massive growth in popularity of social media and the challenges it presents to Senior Executives about its use and abuse.
To put this growth in perspective, there are now more than 800m active Facebook users and over 1 billion tweets per week on Twitter. Richard’s session highlighted the following issues.

  • Who owns content on social media such as LinkedIn contacts or followers on twitter?
  • Are employers discriminating against candidates by using Facebook to pre-screen prospective employees?

Content - Rent or Own?

Our latest group discussion has revolved around the question of how consumers  consume and manage their content and how this may change in the future. There have been some great contributions and we picked out one below from Adrian Scott which we thought was a good summary of the discussion.

Do you agree with Jeff Bewkes, CEO at Time Warner, that consumers prefer buying to renting in a digital environment, and that the real issue is not having a way to manage their films?

Adrian Scott

- Owning containers (books, vinyl, CDs, cassettes, etc.) is no more or less than a way of having instant on-demand access to stuff you like
- In most cases it is no longer the only way to get that access
- If you can get that access securely and reliably from an online streaming or download source at reasonable cost there is no longer any need to devote money or houseroom to stockpiling containers, which are liable to deteriorate or become obsolete, or in some other way to become inaccessible over time anyway.
- Online access leaves the consumer free to choose their delivery device and to switch between delivery devices as they like.
- The big question is how they pay: one-off purchase, rental, subscription. There are many options.

So to revert to the original question, I'm not sure that it's as simple as a choice between owning and renting. I believe the future will be about "obtaining access" and our container-stockpiling mindset will disappear with time. Probably quicker than we think.
