On Saturday 5th March, women, men and children gathered at Writer's Square for this years IWD rally.
As the crowds assembled we enjoyed music from the amazing Maz and Guitar Orchestra. There was plenty of entertainment to suit all ages including face painting and party bags for the younger attendees.
At around 2pm the crowds began to stand behind their banners and to the beat of the drum band we headed off down Royal Avenue.
At Belfast City Hall we heard speeches from the Lord Mayer of Belfast, Lynn Carville (WOMENSTEC), Jo Amy Gowers (NUS-USI) , Naomi (Youth Action) and a poem by Orliath Hendron.
All speakers talked about the great advancements that have been made for women since 1916, however recognised that there is still a long way to go on the journey to equal rights and equal representation in all areas of life.
WRDA would like to extend its thanks to Reclaim the Agenda for putting together this year's fantastic IWD programme, with over 50 events including a series of popular lectures in the Ulster Hall. Thanks also to the speakers, and all the families, individuals and groups who turned up to make 2016’s IWD Rally such a resounding success. We’re looking forward to next year already!
