New Headquarters Reinvigorates SMOTA
The Shoe Market of The Americas (SMOTA) kicks off the Spring '12 buying season with new headquarters at the Miami Free Zone. The trade show producer is the latest tenant to move into the facility, the only active general-purpose foreign trade zone in Miami and the largest in South Florida.

The upcoming SMOTA show (June 26-28) is nearly sold out and buyer pre-registration is already up nearly four percent.
The facility recently added a number of apparel and footwear tenants. Beverlee Maier, the executive director of SMOTA, says the new location presents "excellent networking opportunities with international consultants and footwear manufacturers, such as Florsheim and Josmo, located on the same grounds." She expects the convenient location to help drive down the difficulty and expense in covering offshore markets.
Plans are in the works to partner with the Miami Free Zone during the Sept. 11-13 edition of SMOTA to provide seminars about freight forwarding, tips on how to do business internationally and advise retailers on how to get product to Miami without having to pay duties.

In the meantime, Maier says the SMOTA staff is gearing up for the upcoming show (June 26-28) at the Greater Fort Lauderdale/Broward County Convention Center. "Exhibit space for June is almost sold out and buyer pre-registration is already up four percent," she reports. Exhibitors include Brown Shoe, Clarks, Cole Haan, Nine West, Steve Madden, Vince Camuto Group and Titan Industries. —Angela Velasquez
