A Message from the PHIMA President

It’s hard to believe it is February. We are halfway through the third quarter of the 2020-21 PHIMA year and what a year it has been. I wanted to take this opportunity to provide you with an update. They say the only constant is change. Well, I would like to add that the other ONLY constant is VIRTUAL. Going back to last fiscal year, we quickly learned that VIRTUAL is the NEW NORMAL. As a board we quickly adjusted kicking off the year with a virtual installation of officers during our first quarter virtual board meeting. On the heels of the board meeting, several PHIMA leaders attended the virtual leadership summit – normally a two-day event in Chicago.

August brought our delayed Annual Conference, which was our first attempt at hosting a meeting of that size in a virtual environment. Ironically, we had it in our prior year goals to explore virtual education. Talk about baptism by fire. For those of you who attended, it was a success. Our keynote, Rosemarie Perla, emphasized resiliency. What a perfect message for the year. As you all know, the annual AHIMA conference, scheduled for October, went virtual as did the House of Delegates, attended by PHIMA leadership and to no surprise, our Fall Conference. We hosted our first ever Town Hall and rounded out 2020 with a recap from Rosemarie Perla in a complimentary education session, emphasizing the term resilient.

Last but not least, you will get more details shortly, but we have made the difficult decision to move our Annual Conference in April, to all virtual. Back in November when we approved the agenda, we were hoping to offer at least a hybrid meeting, but that is not going to be possible.

I would be remiss if I did not mention our behind-the-scenes operations. While COVID has certainly hampered much of our in-person activities, there is a silver lining to that. As we expected and was validated at our mid-year budget review, our fiscal health is outstanding thanks to NO travel expenses for meetings such as the Board Meeting, Leadership Symposium or House of Delegates. A special shout out to our Executive Director, Linda McLinden. Linda not only keeps us all on track, but she has also really hit it out of the virtual park with her ability to navigate, shift and pivot our in-person activities to virtual. She really is the wind beneath our wings.

Thank you for trusting me to lead PHIMA this year. It certainly was not the year I expected. It has required empathy, optimism, and fortitude, but as you can see, we have remained agile and accessible, while discovering new ways to engage you, our valued members. As always, please reach out to me if you have any questions, comments or concerns. I look forward to “seeing you” in April!
