President’s Message

President’s Message

Happy New Year MSHIMA!  As changes roll down the pike, we in healthcare see the bigger picture. COVID is still poking its ugly head into our daily lives with fellow Mississippians being hospitalized battling the virus. I know each of us who work in the acute care setting are seeing numbers rise dramatically day to day. Please continue to wear those masks, wash those hands and keep your distance!

The new year also brought in CPT code changes. As covered last month, many changes are related to remote monitoring. Monitoring of devices, ongoing healthcare needs and unfortunately, we’ve become familiar with tele-health visits instead of the face-to-face time we usually get with our health care providers. As medical practices struggle to keep COVID out of their workplaces, putting patients in chairs, touching pens, door knobs, insurance cards and keypads only increases every subsequent persons chances of sharing the virus. My fear is that we’ll go back to where we were in March, April and May of 2021, working remote. Just be prepared for this real possibility.

Your MSHIMA board has been busy planning for our 2022 convention. Plans are in the works for a hybrid of ways to attend and to experience the happenings. We are hoping that we can safely gather together with our vendors, live sessions and a lot of interaction. Please stay tuned to find out further details as we are currently playing it by ear and hoping for the best.

To close my message, I want to quote someone we recently lost who was such a national treasure, Betty White. To all you 50-somethings, I know you remember watching the Golden Girls, to the 60-somethings perhaps it was The Mary Tyler Moore Show. No matter what decade you were introduced to Miss White, we all laughed.

“I know it sounds corny, but I try to see the funny side and the upside, not the downside. I get bored with people who complain about this or that. It’s such a waste of time.” —Parade, 2018

Health Information Professionals to Advocate on the Hill for Patients and their Health Information at Annual Advocacy Summit

Health Information Professionals to Advocate on the Hill for Patients and their Health Information at Annual Advocacy Summit

AHIMA announced today that registration is open for its 2022 Advocacy Summit. More than 200 health information professionals are expected to advocate on urgent topics — like patient identification, telehealth, and health equity — related to patient health information at the virtual event, taking place March 28-29.

Lauren Riplinger, JD, AHIMA’s vice president of policy and government affairs, said the conference is a must-attend for health information (HI) professionals who are leaders or who aspire to leadership roles within their organizations.

“Participation in the Advocacy Summit not only allows attendees to become plugged in to the latest regulatory and legislative developments impacting the industry, it’s also a chance to make sure Congress knows the value of the HI profession and the impact its professionals have on health and healthcare,” Riplinger said. “Speaking with members of Congress and congressional staffs also sharpens the communication and critical thinking skills needed for leaders.”

Omicron Surge May Peak in January, Models Predict

The national surge in COVID-19 cases fueled by the highly transmissible omicron variant may last weeks, rather than months, according to the most recent projections from the COVID-19 Scenario Modeling Hub, a consortium of researchers helping the CDC track the pandemic's trajectory.

The latest ensemble projection combines eight different models from various academic institutions, including Baltimore-based Johns Hopkins University and the University of Notre Dame (Ind.). Researchers developed four different scenarios that factor in various levels of omicron's transmissibility, illness severity and ability to evade natural immunity.

CMS data show Mississippi Medicaid payment, eligibility error rates among lowest in the nation

Mississippi Medicaid’s overall payment error rate is the fourth lowest among the 34 states with publicly available results, according to new state-specific data released by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). Publicly released for the first time, the data also showed Mississippi Medicaid had the third lowest eligibility error rate in the nation.

The federal Payment Error Rate Measurement (PERM) audit process is intended to measure and report an unbiased national improper payment rate for state Medicaid programs. PERM audits are conducted annually by examining 17 states per year, or cycle, with each state reviewed once every three years.

An error does not necessarily mean that an expense should not have occurred. It may also include instances where there was insufficient or no documentation to support a payment or eligibility decision.
