PHIMA Distinguished Member 2020
Lisa Hershey, RHIA, CHDA

PHIMA is proud to honor Lisa Hershey, RHIA, CHDA, as its Distinguished Member for 2020.
Lisa has worked in the HIM field for over 30 years, beginning with her career at Lancaster General Hospital where she worked in supervisory roles in the then Medical Records Department before moving into the Quality Improvement Department. She broadened
 her knowledge and
 experience in the
 behavioral healthcare
 setting as the Director
 of HIM at Philhaven.
 While education was
 always an interest to
 Lisa, she was able to
begin teaching classes for Harrisburg Area Community College (HACC) in 1993 and contributed to the development of their HIT curriculum. Later, she returned to Lancaster General Health in a Health Data Analyst role before seizing an opportunity as Program Director for Medical Billing and Coding/Health Information Technology at YTI Career Institute. Lisa developed the HIT curriculum and launched the CAHIIM accredited program at YTI in 2014. She continues to serve as adjunct faculty at YTI and remains actively involved in mentoring and developing future HIM professionals.
Lisa states her roles in education as truly rewarding, as she has had the pleasure of contributing to, then seeing, the growth and development of outstanding HIT professionals. As an educator, she has found the HIM community to be supportive and available to students, with many colleagues participating as guest speakers, adjunct instructors, and site supervisors for student internships.
Lisa has remained an active member of CPHIMA and PHIMA throughout her career, including serving in various volunteer positions at the local and state level. She served as CPHIMA President twice and chaired various committees, including the Membership and Arrangements committees. At the state level, Lisa has served on committees and more recently served as PHIMA Director, a role she embraced with enthusiasm. In these volunteer roles, she promoted and expanded scholarship opportunities, as well as student involvement and leadership, in both organizations. Outside of professional associations, Lisa never misses an opportunity to promote the HIM field to young people searching for a career.
Lisa is a graduate of York College of Pennsylvania with a Bachelor’s in Health Records Administration and a minor in Business Management.
Although we were unable to present Lisa with her award at the Annual Conference, PHIMA’s Treasurer, Laura Rizzo, MHA, RHIA, FAHIMA, was able to have dinner with Lisa and her husband, Brent, to present her with the award on behalf of PHIMA.
We congratulate and thank Lisa for her commitment and contributions to the HIM profession through her volunteer service and through her role as an educator.
