Pennsylvania School Counselors Association (PSCA) Recap
Margie Stackhouse, RHIA, CPC
The Pennsylvania School Counselors Association (PCSA) 64th Annual Conference was held at the Station Square Sheraton Hotel on November 21-22, 2019. The school counselors work with Pre-K through 12th grade students in their respective school districts. There was a large contingent from Western Pennsylvania in addition to many counselors from across the state. The overall registered number of attendees was over 375 this year and over 60 exhibitor/sponsor booths representing many colleges, technical schools and career opportunities.
PHIMA sponsored a booth in the exhibit hall and Kim Black and I talked to over 300 school counselors about careers in Health Information Management. Many of the counselors were not aware of what Health Information Management careers involve and we talked to them about the diversity of opportunities available. Our elevator pitch came in handy as well. Many expressed an interest in finding out more about HIM careers and were given the Executive Director’s information if they want to schedule PHIMA for one of their career fairs.
PHIMA raffled a $50 VISA gift card and the lucky winner was Michelle Dvorchak from the Ringgold School District. Sarris Candies, Inc. from Canonsburg, PA donated individually wrapped chocolate covered pretzels and AHIMA sent lip balm to pass out. Thank you to both of them. We had information on many of the AHIMA credentialed schools in PA to distribute as well.
It is always nice to meet with other organizations and give information on who we are and opportunities in Health Information Management.
The PSCA 65th Annual Conference will be December 3-4, 2020 at the Hershey Hodge in Hershey, PA.
