GSACS Well Represented at
ACS Leadership & Advocacy Summit

Drs. Wendy Greene, Jesse Codner and Joe Sharma
Several GSACS members took part in the ACS 2022 Leadership & Advocacy Summit earlier this month in Washington, DC.

The Leadership Summit offered compelling topics, including The Surgeon as the Second Victim, Surgeons May Be Better Leaders than They Think, and the Leadership Imperative for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Surgery.

Also popular was a session moderated by Rohan Jeyarajah, MD, FACS, on surgeon well-being. Tips and lessons learned came from ACS President Julie A. Freischlag, MD, FACS, FRCSEd (Hon), DFSV, MAMSE; ACS Regent Douglas E. Wood, MD, FACS, FRCSEd; and Melanie A. Edwards, MD, FACS, from the ACS Women in Surgery Committee.

During the Advocacy portion, participants learned about several federal legislative priorities, including long-term stability of Medicare physician payment, ensuring the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services implements the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act as intended, easing the burden of prior authorization, maintaining a strong surgical workforce, and acknowledging Congress’s efforts to recognize the 100th anniversaries of the ACS Committee on Trauma and Commission on Cancer.

In addition, participants engaged in more than 150 virtual visits with lawmakers and their senior staff members.

UPDATE: Ukraine

Through Operation Giving Back, the American College of Surgeons is following the humanitarian crisis currently unfolding in Ukraine.
March 28, 2022

Dear Colleague,

Many of you have reached out to us, asking how you can contribute to the care of victims in war-torn Ukraine.

At this time, no current role or mechanism exists for safe travel to help in person. Healthcare facilities seem to be well staffed but supplies and equipment are desperately needed.

Listed below are a few non-governmental organizations that are asking for monetary donations and/or supplies: In addition, we are accepting donations to get STOP THE BLEED® supplies to people on the ground in Ukraine and Poland.

We will continue to update you on this evolving situation and look for additional opportunities in which ACS members can support the victims of this crisis.
