Meet the WHIMA 2020 Award Recipients

WHIMA had to adapt and adjust to a different way of presenting awards to our 2020 recipients due to COVID-19 and the cancellation of the in-person 2020 Annual Conference! COVID did not stop our VIP Team who took the ceremony on the road! Each week in the e-Alert, WHIMA will showcase an award recipient including their acceptance speech.

 This week, WHIMA
 presents the 2020
 Distinguished Member
 Award to Susan
 Summerfield, MePD, RHIA.

For many of our members, Susan has been a fixture of WHIMA for such a long time – from the Board, to President, to team lead/member for Nominating Committee, Annual Conference team, Spirit team, Scholarship team, and everything in between. You will see her on stage, setting up or cleaning up events, registering members for conferences, presenting, singing, dancing, and so much more! She is known by so many as a “go to” person within the association by either assisting members or connecting members with someone who can assist.

Her passion for WHIMA and our profession is displayed in each and everything that she does – her stand-out quality is her passion to students and the newer/younger membership. Her support for our members starts with her dedication and loyalty to promoting students – not only at the technical college where she works, but also other schools. She takes them under her wing to introduce, involve, and/or simply encourage them to meet other members, and get involved in activities and roles not only at the state level, but also at the national level. She stays involved with those members that she encourages to ensure success.

In acceptance of this prestigious award, Susan writes:

“I am truly blessed to have been nominated and honored to receive the Distinguished Member award. Over 25 years ago, I attended my first WHIMA conference. I felt a little lost not knowing anyone or what to expect from the conference. I was so amazed and overwhelmed at the WHIMA conference. I decided that I wasn't going to feel lost at the next conference. I was going to get involved with WHIMA and get to know my peers. It was the best decision I ever made. I joined several of the WHIMA teams. I learned so much and made countess number of new friends. I always say that there is not a town that I can drive through that I don't know someone from WHIMA. I cannot thank you WHIMA for presenting me with this award and being a member of a great profession. I encourage all WHIMA members to join a team. You will develop lifelong friendship and gain an immense amount of knowledge through WHIMA teams. I can guarantee you that you will have an experience of a lifetime. Thank you again!”

Susan – Congratulations on a well-deserved award!

Send congratulations to Susan at SummerfieldS@westerntc.edu.
