AAHIM e-Alert

April 22, 2022

Inside this Issue:

Advocacy Request

We need you to sign two “Dear Colleague” letters from Representative Bill Foster (D-IL) and Representative Mike Kelly (R-PA) urging Congress to repeal Section 510 from the Fiscal Year 2023 (FY23) Labor-HHS appropriations bill, and to direct $7 million of funds appropriated to the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT (ONC) be used for patient matching standards.

For three years, the House has repealed Section 510 from the Labor-HHS appropriations bill, and last year the Senate draft Labor-HHS bill also removed Section 510 from their bills, though final negotiations saw the ban reinserted into the final FY22 budget. Section 510 has been a barrier to moving forward a national strategy on patient identification, and this is the year we must ensure its repeal.

AHIMA needs your help to contact your Representative THIS WEEK and urge them to sign onto the Foster-Kelly letters supporting the repeal of Section 510 and the prioritization of ONC resources for patient matching.

Teaching has been a passion of mine since I was in grammar school. I finally achieved my goal. I am do something every day that I love to do.
Something Surprising to Know About Me
Something that only a few people may know about me is that I am a trained clown. My son wanted to become a clown when he was only 11 years old. So, we went to “clown school” together.

Another thing is that I love the outdoors and I like to go hiking and geocaching. For those that have never heard of that, it is a sport where you look for small objects in different places all over the world. They could be in caves, beside a tree, under a guardrail, on a stop sign, under a rock, on a billboard, just anywhere in plain sight sometimes, but out of sight. You must look to find them. So far, I have found almost 5000 of them in 43 states and several countries. There is one on the moon, but I have not found it yet.
How Did I Get Into HIM? I love Math (I wanted to be a Math teacher) and Healthcare. I started looking into how I could combine those two things & I met Sara Grostick. I began as a supervisor when I graduated with my BS. Sara encouraged me to start teaching once I got my Master’s. I have loved growing in different HIM capacities & teaching throughout my career.
