WHIMA Leadership Symposium

Kari Bjorge (WHIMA President-Elect) and I attended the AHIMA Leadership Symposium July 12-13 in Chicago with the other CSA leadership.  We were able to attend sessions that helped us to grow leaders within our CSA, manage our association finances, communication and resolve conflict.  During our industries current transformation, we have a better understanding how communication is key.  Change is all around our industry and WHIMA is committed and will continue to keep you, our members, up to date with our industries changes.  We will continue to send e-Alerts with vital industry information, post on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn.  We will also have our Wisconsin Engage Community, if you are not a member, please join.  As with most transformations’ conflicts can also arise.

Many times, when conflicts arise, we consider the conflict to be a negative and the conflict can leave a negative impression.  When conflicts arise, we really have an amazing opportunity to create a positive change.  With this opportunity to create a positive change we are also able to allow oneself the opportunity to manage the conflict as opposed to the conflict managing ourselves.

During this event we were able to listen to an update to AHIMA’s Transformation presented by Wylecia Wiggs Harris (AHIMA CEO) and Valerie Watzlaf (AHIMA President) in a townhall style event.  This presentation was impactful on how we have progressed in just one year.  AHIMA’s vision is a world where trusted information transforms health and healthcare by connecting people, systems, and ideas.  AHIMA’s strategic outcomes represents steps toward this vision.  AHIMA’s short term focus will be on current strengths while exploring growth opportunities to lead AHIMA toward renewal in 2019.  The long-term focus is to lay the foundation for innovation and greater impact within the healthcare ecosystem by 2023.

Through a multi-year strategy AHIMA has 3 strategic outcomes:
  • Advance and advocate for the creation and use of trusted information across the evolving health continuum.
  • Shape the health information profession by growing the influence and competitiveness of health information skillsets.
  • Drive strategic transformation and renewed growth as a great partner and place to work.
This will not be easy, but with our cohesiveness as a profession and our passion for information – we will be known as the “House of Health Information.”
