President Message

By Tiffany Ortiz, RHIT, CCS, CCS-P

For a few days in late October, it was hard to believe that we had just been through almost two years of a life changing pandemic. We welcomed members from Georgia, North Carolina, and Virginia to join us at our second annual Quad State Convention or QUAD21 as it was called. While it was not as busy as our first Quad State due to travel restrictions, apprehension, and finances, it was packed full of great educational sessions and vendor exhibits. A few of our members even presented this year! Nancy Lindberg who presented three coding sessions and Katherine Isbell who presented two coding sessions. Dan Ellison and Susan Richardson presented at the student academy on the RHIT/RHIA certification. Our past-president, Amanda Cooper was part of a panel discussion for the Keynote Address titled YOU! We had a SCHIMA Breakfast for all members, sponsored by Scan Stat, where we recognized our past presidents in attendance and gave Amanda her award for her hard work as the 2020-2021 President of SCHIMA.

If you feel like you missed out, do not fear! Soon, you will see an offering of almost all the educational sessions available for purchase for you to listen in the comfort of your own home. Plus, you will get some CEUs! Then you can plan on joining us in person in July 2022 in Greenville, SC for the SCHIMA Annual Convention.

Quad State – Student Academy

The 2021 Southeastern Health Data and Information Conference (Quad21) Student Academy was a great success.  We had experienced faculty from all four states offering educational sessions on various student centric topics.  We also had a meeting with exhibitors looking to hire new graduates.  SCHIMA board members and SC based educators, Dr. Susan Richardson and Dan Ellison provided a session reinforcing the importance of the base RHIT or RHIA credential with the potential for “stacking credentials” for greater success with job placement and career advancement.  It was well received and generated great discussion.   All students were also able to meet with their respective CSA board leaders as well.  We would like to thank all our students who were able to make the conference and learn how important networking with other students and HIM leaders and professionals in the workforce is to prosper and excel in our field. While our numbers were lower than expected given the waning pandemic, and the associated concerns, it was clear nothing is as important to relationship  building than a good in person event.  We hope our SC students will all attend SCHIMA ‘s annual meeting next summer in Greenville, SC. You are our future, and we want you to succeed!
Kind regards,
Dan Ellison, RHIA
