KHIMA and MoHIMA Members,
It’s been a few years since the Kansas and Missouri Health Information Management Associations have come together for an in-person educational meeting, so we hope you can join us for the KHIMA and MoHIMA Joint Annual Meeting at the spacious and beautiful Overland Park Convention Center (OPCC), April 12-14, 2023.
As you may remember, the last joint annual meeting was very well attended and registrants were turned away due to our limited meeting space. This year’s KHIMA and MoHIMA Joint Annual Meeting has so much to offer including open, spacious meeting rooms and foyers, free WIFI in the meeting space, up to 31 potential continuing education hours (less than $10 per CE hour), and much more!
The OPCC has many amenities to offer including a sensory room for meeting attendees who may experience sensory overload, along with a lactation room for nursing mothers and is easily located right off Interstate 435.
The host hotel, Sheraton Overland Park Hotel at the Convention Center, is conveniently connected with the OPCC via a covered walkway, so you won’t have to worry about inclement weather when attending the meeting sessions. And, don’t miss out on the food and fun that Overland Park has to offer! Click here for a list of things to do in Overland Park.
We hope you take advantage of this educational experience where professionals and friends from Kansas and Missouri come together to celebrate the Health Information profession. Register on or before March 22nd to get the early bird price.
Register today! We’ll see you there!

HHS Proposes to Standardize Electronic Health Care Attachments Transactions and Electronic Signature Processes to Improve the Care Experience for Patients and Providers
|
|
CMS, on behalf of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), issued the proposed rule, “Adoption of Standards for Health Care Attachments Transactions and Electronic Signatures, and Modification to Referral Certification and Authorization Transaction Standard (CMS-0053-P).” If finalized, the proposed rule would adopt standards for “health care attachments” transactions, such as medical charts, x-rays, and provider notes that document physician referrals, and office or telemedicine visits.
The modifications to the adopted Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) transactions would support both health care claims and prior authorization transactions, standards for electronic signatures to be used in conjunction with health care attachments transactions, and a modification to the standard for the referral certification and authorization transaction. The proposed rule estimates a savings of $454 million annually in administrative costs and is a part of HHS’ and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ (CMS) ongoing efforts to significantly reduce paperwork burdens and empower health care providers to focus on direct patient care and streamline the care experience for patients and providers.

CMS Proposes Rule to Expand Access to Health Information and Improve the Prior Authorization Process
|
|
As part of the Biden-Harris Administration’s ongoing commitment to increasing health data exchange and investing in interoperability, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) issued a proposed rule that would improve patient and provider access to health information and streamline processes related to prior authorization for medical items and services.
CMS proposes to modernize the health care system by requiring certain payers to implement an electronic prior authorization process, shorten the time frames for certain payers to respond to prior authorization requests, and establish policies to make the prior authorization process more efficient and transparent. The rule also proposes to require certain payers to implement standards that would enable data exchange from one payer to another payer when a patient changes payers or has concurrent coverage, which is expected to help ensure that complete patient records would be available throughout patient transitions between payers.
