MSHIMA e-News

October 2019

President’s Message

Hello everyone!! It has been such a busy year for us already. In October the delegation attended the House of Delegates meeting held in conjunction with the 2019 Conference. As many of you know, there had been significant controversy surrounding the 2019 AHIMA election as the President–Elect position was a non- contested race. Mississippi joined 12 other states in submitting a substantial by-laws revision to ensure this does not happen again. After discussion, the language stating no national election shall have an uncontested position passed with overwhelming majority. The remaining revisions were sent for review and will be presented for further discussion at a later date.

Now we turn our attention closer to home. As we look forward to the upcoming year, we are expecting many exciting things for our future. Over the past year, the board made the decision to scale down our focus and concentrate on the things that really matter and that is you, our membership!! We want to make sure we are reaching out to our members and our students. Board members are going to be more visual to our membership, and make an outreach to our educational programs. If you would like a board member to attend an event at your facility or visit your program, please reach out to us and we will have someone do a site visit. The other thing we are going to focus on is advocacy within our state. This past year we were able to work with the MHA Revenue Roundtable on the successful passage of HB628. We are very proud to be partners with other organizations to help improve the healthcare industry right here at home.

As we move into our new year, we ask for your help with suggestions of educational opportunities and events that would most benefit our membership. Please reach out to us through the website for any suggestions or comments that you have. We certainly look forward to serving you in the year to come, and are so thankful you have entrusted us with this task. I want to thank you all personally for giving me the opportunities over the past 10 years to be a leader in MSHIMA. I certainly hope I have lived up to the responsibility so far, and continue to lead with your best interest in mind. I wish you all an amazing year!!

CMS Readmissions Penalty Adjustment Reducing The Hit For High Dual-Eligible Hospitals

Hospitals that treat large populations of patients insured by both Medicare and Medicaid appear to be benefiting from the changes made to the CMS' Hospital Readmissions Reduction Program with lower penalties, according to new data.

In the recent release of fiscal 2020 penalties for the program, the CMS for the second time risk-adjusted hospitals into five peer groups by proportion of inpatient stays where the patient was dually eligible for both Medicare and Medicaid. Hospitals in peer group one had the lowest percentage of dual-eligible patients while hospitals in peer group five had the highest percentage.

CMS to Collect Information on Prices 340B Hospitals Actually Day For Drugs

The CMS on Thursday issued a notice that it will collect information from hospitals participating in the 340B drug discount program about the prices they pay for eligible drugs.

Although a federal judge tossed the CMS' planned 340B reimbursement cuts in December, the agency hopes that it will win an appeal and move forward with the changes. If that happens, the CMS will need information on the actual prices that hospitals pay for drugs under the 340B program to calculate average sales prices and make the cuts.
