Virtual reality, a conference in collaboration with the MIT Open Documentary Lab and a digital artist on the agenda
For the fourth straight year, the joys of Digital Spring will be warming Montreal at the Phi Centre from March 22 to May 29.
Felix & Paul Studios, or virtually fearless (Free admission)
From March 22 to May 29, all eyes are on Montreal virtual reality pioneers, Felix & Paul Studios. Montrealers are invited to our unique Virtual Reality Garden to discover the work of these Quebec cultural leaders with a truly global impact. Visitors have a chance to experience seven virtual reality (VR) journeys never before seen at Phi, starting with four flights of cinematic fancy co-created with Cirque du Soleil:
- Epic martial arts tale KÀ The Battle Within;
- A dizzying 360° performance by the cast of Zarkana;
- The surreal amphibians of DREAMS OF «O»;
- And Daytime Emmy award-winning Inside the Box of Kurios – Cabinet of Curiosities.
As for documentary lovers, they can explore the world of dinosaurs from up close in Jurassic World: Apatosaurus, or spend time with former US President Barack Obama in Through the Ages: President Obama Celebrates America’s National Parks and the trailer for The People’s House: Inside the White House with Barack and Michelle Obama. See it all for free, six days a week.
Digital memory: losing hope?
Five years ago, we described them as powerful and groundbreaking. Now, they seem destined to be forgotten. As the next wave of innovations in the digital arts is upon us, the need to keep yesterday's documentaries from vanishing forever is getting dire. On May 5, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Open Documentary Lab and Phi, in collaboration with IDFA DocLab and the Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision, present the one-day multidisciplinary conference, Update Or Die!
Global leaders from the Tate in London to ARTE France, NFB, Google and Mozilla will converge on Montreal and the Phi Centre to discuss the latest on the ultimate irony of modern times: preventing the digital information age from losing its memory.

Ed Atkins (Free admission)
As part of the Ed Atkins: Modern Piano Music exhibition that will be presented at DHC/ART from April 20 to September 3, the British artist will be at the Phi Centre on April 20 for a free conference moderated by the exhibition Curator, Cheryl Sim. The conference will also be broadcast on the DHC/ART website.
Ed Atkins makes digital, computer-generated videos that emphatically stress corporal, analogue reality. The videos exhibited at DHC/ART have the startling ability to return us to our bodies despite – or perhaps because of – their bodiless, digital constitution. The animations themselves centre on representations of starkly physical things, sensations, and experiences – a singularly human affective terrain performed by uncannily realistic computer-animated surrogates.
