Let’s practice visualizing! Last month you began to visualize, journal your insights and create intentions for your life. This month, let’s explore “See It
,” the visualization component, of the See It. Say It. Do It!
Model. For the purpose of our discussion, visualization is defined as follows:The ability to imagine, sense, become aware of, move, manipulate and expand the pictures in your “mind’s eye” and the feelings or senses in your body, thereby developing new perspectives and creativity.
Notice that visualization is defined in a very multi-sensory way. It is not just about pictures in your mind. It includes other body senses, including smells, sounds, tastes, and feelings. Sometimes, people just have a “knowing” or a “sense” without noticing an image. Everyone is different. There is no right or wrong. Just be aware of your own process.
Visualization is used in business, sports, healthcare, education and personal relationships. In other words, just about everywhere in your life. As Jack Canfield states in The Success Principles
, “Your ability to visualize your dreams will serve as a catalyst in their creation.” Harvard University researchers found in a study that students who visualize in advance, performed tasks with nearly 100% accuracy, whereas students who didn’t visualize achieved only 55 percent accuracy. Researchers at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota found that guided imagery can help you use the full range of your body’s healing capacity. In fact, they are exploring guided imagery in the treatment of cancer, preparation for surgery, chronic stress and headaches. Athletes use visualization to prepare for competitions. The common denominator in achieving success in these examples is visualization. Create and use the image that leads to the action that will bring you what you want. It could be getting a promotion, going on a special vacation, earning a good grade, or gaining self-confidence, happiness and peace.
To visualize, there are several strategies which help you succeed:
To begin, let’s practice some breathing techniques to relax, breath and build awareness. Teaching your child how to relax carries a lifetime benefit in all areas of his life. How would you like your child to be nice and relaxed the next time she takes a test? So relaxed that she can read easily, think clearly and be resourceful.
- Build Awareness
- Have Fun
- Relate the activities to specific goals
- Be consistent in doing the activities
Want a fun relaxing activity for you and your children? Try our featured activity of the month: Belly Breathing. Belly Breathing techniques are great for stress reduction. Explain to your child how he can use relaxing and breathing when he gets tense. Practice with him regularly until he becomes comfortable with the strategy and it becomes automatic. Then, when stressful situations occur, Belly Breathing techniques can be easily called on to reduce the nerves.
This month, I invite you to relax, breath and open your “mind’s eye” to the possibilities of your goals and intentions that you created last month. There is no right way to visualize, so just enjoy your personal process. Remember to journal after your visualizations. That will prepare you for March's newsletter that will provide more experience and information about "See It," visualize.

Let's Practice Visualizing!
Activity of the Month:
Purpose: Learn how to breathe from the belly (tummy).
Instructions to parent: Find a quiet place where your child can lie down.
Instructions to child: Shake out all your wiggles and just let all the tightness in your body fall away.
When you are ready, lie down, and make yourself comfortable.
Close your eyes.
Find your belly button and put one hand on it and the other hand on the center of your chest.
Simply notice how you are breathing. Which hand raises the most as you breathe in?
Slowly, make one or two full breaths out.
Just notice how you are breathing.
Now place both hands on your belly.
Continue to simply be aware of your breathing.
Notice your belly rise when you breathe in (inhale), and fall when you let air out (exhale).
Continue breathing through your nose, in and out.
If your child is having difficulty with this activity, try the following:
- Place a light weight such as a book on his belly so that he can see and feel it rise and fall.
- Place a support such as a pillow under his head.
- Have him bend his knees until they point up towards the ceiling and place the soles of his feet flat on the floor, hip-width apart.
- Have him turn over and lie on his stomach. It may be easier for him to notice his belly rising and falling because of the pressure from the floor on his belly.
