July 2016

President's Message

Carla Hill
Business Furniture Corporation

Hello!  We are midway through an eventful  year at Executive Women in Healthcare!   I’d like to thank our Board Members, Committee Chairs and all our Committee members for their hard work & commitment to our mission to offer women opportunities to exchange knowledge, create new relationships and foster personal & professional growth.
We have had some great events this year including our Legislative Update, a program on Behavioral and Mental Health, and the Health Information Exchange with John Kanksy.  Our Awards Celebration at Ruth’s Chris - Keystone in March was extremely well attended and we enjoyed the comments of Dr. Lisa Harris, President of Eskenazi Health.  We were also able to meet our Marian University scholarship award recipient, Ashley Johnson.  Later in March we met to make baskets for the Art for Beds Silent Auction, where we volunteered our time to support fundraising for those who most desperately need healthcare assistance  in our community.

As many of you know, we have new Committee structures in 2016.  These include Sustainability (formerly Sponsorship), Member Growth (attracting & retaining EWHC members), Events (Programs and Community Involvement), and Promotions (including our website, newsletter & social media).   If you are interested in joining a committee, please email Amy Herbertz at   We would love to have you.
Beyond our Committee changes , EWHC  initiated several  positive changes in the last year.  We created a new logo, updated our website and employed a new management company after the resignation of Susan Darwent (thank you Susan for your years of dedication).  As a volunteer based not-for-profit 501(c)(3) a small increase was instituted to account for the additional management costs.   – the first in 15 years.
For the remainder of 2016 we have some exciting events planned.   We plan to once again provide members the opportunity to participate in the EWHC Fashion Show, Fall Leadership event and holiday Adopt a Family and Tree Lighting events.   Please visit for more information.

We welcome you to invite your colleagues to join EWHC.  Benefits of being a member include…
  • Discounted rates for programs & events
  • Complimentary member’s only events
  • Networking opportunities with women in the healthcare field
  • Access to our membership directory
  • Opportunities to post job openings and job requests
In the spirit of networking, when you are asked for a referral or need professional services, please think about your fellow EWHC members.  Also remember the best way to get the most out of your membership in EWHC is to join a committee and get involved.
We look forward to seeing you soon!

June Seminar Recap:
Health Information Exchange

Did you know that the nation’s largest inter-organizational Clinical Data Repository is here in Indiana?
Founded in 2004, the Indiana Health Information Exchange (IHIE) is the largest of its kind in the U.S., connecting more than 30,000 healthcare providers in 17 states.
IHIE President and CEO John Kansky was the guest speaker at the EWHC breakfast event on June 21 at the new offices of Business Furniture. He described how IHIE is helping to assemble the puzzle of facilitating the electronic exchange of health information combining clinical and personal health records.
“Through data sharing we can follow the footprint of the patient across the region through the digital exchange of information across communities, states, and technology systems,” Kansky said. “This incorporates the focus on the health of the patient.”
Kansky added that government is restricted by state lines when it comes to identifying area healthcare providers. Patients aren’t. They will travel across state lines to find the best medical treatments.
Hospital systems and payers still face some challenges with health information exchanges. Some can’t agree on data sharing because of competition in the marketplace; others experience technology barriers. IHIE is currently participating in a pilot program to promote exchange of data in the Midwest. This program promises to improve interoperability amongst healthcare providers, which will continue to expand the coordination of patient care.
