Before it was Cornerstone....
Dear <<First Name>>

June is here in Kingston and we are excited that we will be re-opening our doors to our loyal friends and family (albeit in a limited capacity) once again. Currently the opening date is Monday June 14. We've missed you all so much! It's been a tough year on so many levels, but when the going gets tough the tough get going! Don't think for a minute that because the store has been closed that we haven't been busy....

Behind the scenes more ordering has taken place for new springtime pieces. I don't know about you, but having been cooped up for a year without anywhere to go, has made me want to spiff up myself, my house and my cottage with some colour and some sparkle! New pottery, jewellery, bags, silk scarves, prints, cards and the list goes on. We've been making headway with the on-line store and hope to go live VERY SOON! We were the recipients of some grant money care of The Kingston Economic Development (Thank you!) and we are looking to upgrade our computers, get new signage that reflects our branding and increase our social media activities with fresh & relevant content.

It's been challenging to plan for our 40th Anniversary celebrations with not knowing the ins & outs of re-opening but now we can move forward and "Get This Party Started"! We invite you to like and share on FB/Instagram and check back in often to keep up on all the happenings.

June has typically been a busy month in the past with graduations, weddings and Father's Day. These events are still occurring (maybe in smaller numbers) so please come and check us out for that meaningful Canadian gift  that the lucky recipient will keep forever. Getting back to a "new normal" will make everyone feel better. We will be implementing the new "Customer Loyalty" program too later on this month. We felt it was a way for us to show our loyal customers that were are loyal to them as well! We will let you know how it works and when it starts!

Other goings on... June is PRIDE month! We want to reming everyone that Love Is Love and to be kind to everyone. Our Kingston Pride Festival has been pushed out to September 25 & 26th this year but that doesn't mean we can't celebrate now.

June 21 is Indigenous Day. This year we need to celebrate the lives and culture of our Indigenous peoples more than ever.  More so after the disturbing evidence recently discovered in B.C. with the location of 215 missing Residential School children's bodies. Residential school survivors have been telling authorities for years of child genocide occurring at various school locations with no investigations or charges being laid. This horrific period in our history brings to light the shameful, deceitful and barbaric methods that were used to "whitewash" an entire culture. We have been warned that the discovery of these missing children may not be the last and that we should be "prepared" for more. This is heartbreaking but doesn't end there. The marginalization and mistreatment of the Indigenous People of Canada continues on today and it must stop. We cannot change the past for sure but we are responsible for what happened then, what we do now, how we change the current conversation and how we not just make amends (because that isn't even a possibility), but how we become the inclusive and respectful society, where everyone is valued, and there is no need to strip culture or language away.
We each have our own responsibility and part we can play in the rebuilding of our relationship with our First Nations, Metis and Inuit people. In the end we are all human beings. Love, kindness, generosity and understanding, compassion and inclusion are the tools that can guide us in how we move forward.  The conversation needs to begin with our Indigenous peoples and how THEY want this to be discussed, approached and managed.

From our hearts to yours,

Fun Facts For June

Foodland Ontario's Recipe For June

Strawberry Smoothie

Strawberry Smoothie

This fruity, frothy and good-for-you smoothie can be prepared (without the ice cubes) in the blender and refrigerated overnight ready to blend in the morning.

Preparation Time: 5 minutes

Servings: 4

  • 2 cups (500 mL) Ontario Strawberries, hulled
  • 1 cup (250 mL) Ontario Milk
  • 1 cup (250 mL) low-fat strawberry-flavoured yogurt
  • 1 tbsp (15 mL) Ontario Honey
  • 4 ice cubes
  • 4 Ontario Strawberries

In blender, combine hulled strawberries, milk, yogurt, honey and ice cubes; process until smooth. Pour into chilled glasses. Garnish with fresh strawberry. Serve immediately.

Tips: Buy local strawberries when in season; wash and remove hulls. Freeze in single layer on baking sheet; transfer to freezer bags and store in the freezer until ready to use. Omit the ice cubes in this smoothie and use frozen strawberries.

For brunch, serve in stemmed wine glass.

Nutrition boost:

For fibre and Omega-3, add 3 tbsp (45 mL) ground flaxseed.

Instant skim milk powder is a great way to add calcium and protein and makes the smoothie creamier. Try 1/4 cup (50 mL) in this recipe.

A Meditative Artform

Zentangle is a meditative art form that is based on a series of simple line strokes. Complicated patterns are produced, "One Stroke At A Time". Drawn on a "Tile" that is 3.5" x 3.5" with nothing more than a pencil & a pen, they are meant to be finished in 20 - 30 minutes. A perfect way to reduce stress, and be imaginative and creative without having "drawing skills".
