Here is this week in charts.

Bet on it. Digital sports betting is booming. The amount of revenue generated by the practice has increased considerably over the past few years, rising from $1.1B in 2020 to an estimated $6.9B in 2022. Amid the rise, this year’s Super Bowl alone is expected to draw more than $1.1B in wagers. If this projection pans out, the upcoming matchup between the Eagles and the Chiefs will be crowned “the most bet-upon sporting event in US history.” In the face of this betting boom, many organizations — including the NBA — are making moves to capitalize on the shift.

Protect me. In the face of rising interest rates, public stock turmoil, and a stalling IPO market, late-stage investors scaled back their dealmaking and secured more payout protection last year. In the US, 44% of late-stage deals in 2022 (and 50% in Q4’22) were negotiated with seniority or tiered payout structures, marking an 8.9 percentage point increase from 2021. Super-duper Uber. Uber has put pandemic lockdowns behind it. In Q4'22, Uber saw mobility gross bookings (i.e., total value of fares paid) rise 31% year-over-year as it surpassed 2B global trips in one quarter for the first time. Continued demand for food delivery services greatly benefited the company’s growth as well. Many delivery companies, however, had a much different experience in 2022 — a number of startups in the space shut down entirely. Learn more about the fallen in this report.

Obesity worldwide. Forty percent of adults (individuals aged 15+) in the US are obese, putting the US at the top of the obesity rate charts. It is followed by Chile and Mexico, where around 1 out of every 3 adults is obese. The long-term costs of this for these countries will be profound. But it seems very little is being done to proactively address the obesity epidemic.

American exceptionalism. Giving the US its own axis is crazy misleading. China actually spends like a third of what the US spends. Question everything, folks.
