Here is this week in charts.

Digitally altered. Tech is in a much different place today than it was during the dotcom bubble, or when Facebook launched in 2004. The proliferation of smartphones and computers across the globe — over three-quarters of adults now have one — has supercharged industries from fintech to digital health, as tech and the internet have become an integral part of most adults’ lives around the world.

New banks. Brazil-based fintech Nubank — one of the most valuable fintechs in the world — has filed to go public. The Buffett-backed challenger bank was last valued at $30B and could reportedly seek an IPO valuation of over $55B. US-based challenger bank Chime is also in talks to go public at a $35B to $45B valuation, according to Forbes. The announcements come amid record levels of fintech exit activity in 2021 YTD.

Prime time. Amazon is now the #3 package courier in the US, surpassing FedEx to control one-fifth of the country’s delivery market. It has seen a meteoric rise since 2014, when it began handling more of its deliveries in-house — a logistics operation which Morgan Stanley analysts predict Amazon will launch as a standalone delivery service in the near future. E-commerce giants are aggressively competing on fulfillment and delivery speed as e-commerce volumes continue to grow. 

12 zeros. Tesla has vaulted into the trillion-dollar club. When rental car company Hertz announced on Monday it would purchase 100,000 Teslas for $4.2B, Tesla’s shares went up more than 12% — pushing its market cap above the $1T mark. The car company is now the fifth most valuable publicly traded company in the US. Tesla is just one of Elon Musk’s many ventures. We look at all 8 industries, from auto to aerospace, the richest man in the world and his companies are taking on here. 

Took a dive. Fishing records from as far back as 1500 show how quickly cod stocks collapsed in Eastern Canada following 1968’s peak catch. Advances in fishing technology — like better nets and sonar — made it possible to catch more fish. But the intensive fishing drove a dramatic decline in fish stocks, leading Canada to put a moratorium on cod fishing in 1992. The cod industry still has not recovered since then due to the overfishing.

Just no. A pie chart is never the answer — especially if you’re going to use the same color to show a trend over time.
