Campaign Day gains momentum

This year's national Campaign Day will be taking place between 11am-4pm on Saturday 3rd September at the Terraces Hotel, Stirling. The event promises to be a great celebration of the Countdown Campaign and the Fair trade movement in Scotland in general. With a variety of guest speakers, stalls, videos, workshops and discussions.

The Forum's AGM will take place immediately before the Campaign Day at 10am. Forum members will be notified of the details of the AGM separately.

Belladrum Festival gives support to Fair trade

The Belladrum Music and Arts Festival has become the first festival to be recognised for its support of its support of the campaign to make Scotland a Fair Trade Nation. As a result of efforts to promote Fair Trade produce at the festival, the Tartan Heart Festival has become a trailblazer in gaining official recognition for its contribution to Fair Trade. One of this year’s key achievements has been to create the Verb Garden, a Fair Trade café for festival goers which will host debates, discussions, interviews with performers and Fairtrade wine tasting. The Verb Garden is supported by the Co-operative who will also run a convenience store at the festival, whilst the Inverness Fair Trade group will be offering complimentary Fairtrade samples to an appreciative audience. To encourage local businesses to do their bit for Fair Trade, festival organisers have also urged caterers and retailers to stock at least one Fairtrade product.
  
To allow festival goers to further engage in the Fair Trade movement the Scottish Fair Trade Forum will host a discussion on the role of Fair Trade in tackling global poverty. In addition, younger festival goers have not been forgotten as they will be treated to a Fair Trade treasure hunt.
 
Festival organiser, Joe Gibbs was thrilled with the accolade:
 
“We are delighted to receive this award and we are working hard this year to ensure that we continue to promote Fair Trade to our appreciative and supportive audience.”
 
He also commented that the Scottish Fair Trade Forum acknowledge “the unique place that Belladrum has in the Scottish cultural calendar.”
  
The Director of the Scottish Fair Trade Forum, Martin Rhodes commented “We are absolutely delighted to be making this award to the Festival… The feedback we get from our supporters who attend this event is tremendous and we know that many of the festival goers appreciate being part of these efforts. As we build towards Scotland becoming a Fair Trade nation in 2012 it is only right that Belladrum is recognised for all the hard work and creativity invested.”

Scottish campaigner brings Countdown to Canada



The Scottish Fair Trade Forum were delighted this week to hear of the travels of Morag Rennie, Chair of the Motherwell Fair Trade Steering group, who travelled to Montreal to attend the Soroptimist International Convention earlier this month. Whilst at the conference she gave a talk on the Principles of Fair trade and was followed by Ruth Bruce, Chair of the Garstang Fair trade steering group in Lancashire who provided a talk on "The formation of links with producer towns." Well done to Morag for her work promoting Fair Trade overseas and helping spread the word on Scotland's efforts to become a Fair Trade Nation.
 

Forfar Fair Trade Group on the rise 


  

Director Martin Rhodes met this month with a group from the Forfar Fair Trade steering group to discuss their progress towards Fairtrade status for Forfar. The Forfar group are making great strides towards their goal of Fairtrade town status and we look forward to continue to work with them in the future.

Kyle Academy gains Fairtrade status 

There was excitement in the air at Kyle Academy earlier this month as they gained Fairtrade School status. The Ayrshire Secondary School was very pleased to gain recognition for the school's efforts after a lot of hard work by pupils and staff. The Scottish Fair Trade Forum wishes them all the very best for the future.

"Ethic Alley" goes down a storm

The One World Shop in Edinburgh recently teamed up with the Edinburgh University Harry Potter Society to create a funday of witchcraft and wizardry to celebrate the release of the final Harry Potter film. The day was a great success, with Harry Potter themed treats, magic potions, tea leaf reading and lots more. One of the main parts of the day's proceedings was also a discussion about how to campaign for Harry Potter merchandise to be switched to Fair Trade and we wish them all the very best in this campaign.

Countdown Campaign hits the airwaves 

Radio listeners will be interested to hear that in the coming weeks our Director Martin Rhodes will be taking interviews with Celtic Music Radio on Friday 29th July at 4pm and Awaz FM in a soon to be confirmed Drivetime show. The Countdown Campaign will also be publicised on Celtic Music Radio in a new radio advert in the weeks to come so listen in!

Fair Trade Polyjuice Brownies

This month we have a great recipe to please Harry Potter fans courtesy of Rachel Farey at the One World Shop in Edinburgh who held the "Ethic Alley" event at the shop on the Sunday 24th July to celebrate all things Harry Potter and Fair trade, we hope you enjoy these brownie delights! 

Ingredients:

200g   Fairtrade dark chocolate
80g     Fairtrade cocoa (sifted)
360g   Fairtrade caster sugar
65g     Plain flour (sifted)
250g   Unsalted butter
4 eggs
1 teaspoon of baking powder
50g chopped Fairtrade walnuts (optional but recommended!)
 
For topping: (optional)
Knotgrass: 2 chopped fair trade green fruit jellies (Traidcraft)
Fluxweed: 2 chopped fair trade blue and yellow fruit jellies (Traidcraft)
Powdered horn of bicorn: 1 tbsp Fair trade caster sugar
Lacewing flies: Chopped Divine white chocolate
Leeches: Chopped fair trade cola bottles (Traidcraft)
Shredded boomsland skin: chopped dried pear and peach (Traidcraft)
 
1 Preheat your oven to 180C/350F/gas 4. Line a 25cm square baking tin with greaseproof paper.

2.  In a large bowl over some simmering water, melt the butter and the chocolate and mix until smooth. Add the nuts if you’re using them and stir together. In a separate bowl, mix together the cocoa powder, flour, baking powder and sugar then add this to the chocolate and nut mixture. Stir together well. Beat the eggs and mix in until you have a silky consistency.

3.  Pour your brownie mix into the baking tray and place in the oven for around 20-25 minutes. You don’t want to overcook them so you don’t want a skewer to come out all clean. The brownies should be slightly springy on the outside but still gooey in the middle.

4.  Allow to cool in the tray, then carefully transfer to a large chopping board and cut into chunky squares
 
5. Lastly, decorate the brownies with various toppings from the list above.
