June Newsletter

Hi <<First Name>>, welcome to the Team Fublo newsletter - your monthly update on the stuff we've been working on, reading and planning for the future. But firstly, an apology...

An Apology
It was pointed out to us over the weekend that we hadn't sent the newsletter yet... "Have you taken me off your list?" a friend asked. "No - we're just slow!" we replied.

Sorry! No more delay - Here it is now!

Projects
We mentioned it last month, NIKE78 went 'fully live' with the project outcomes at the end of March. Mark built a custom Wordpress theme for the site and migrated it from static HTML to a fully CMS driven solution which increased productivity. We also added Facebook’s “Like” button (which we mentioned last month), generating a significant increase in traffic, over 6,500 pageviews in the seven days after its inclusion.

Since then the site has delivered nearly 100,000 pageviews and was featured on Campaign, SlamxHype, Hypebeast, High Snobiety and Creative Review to name a few. The project also generated a fantastic volume of conversation on Twitter. Our favourite is definitely W+K Tokyo LAB's "ABUKU -泡-" where the team turn the shoe into a fish tank - the video has over 25,000 views and counting. Amazing work!

In other news, last week we released a new search engine for the Institute for Environmental Security's Action Guide - a database of organisations, publications, initiatives and websites in the field of environment, security and sustainable development. You can read about it on our blog post or head straight over to the Action Guide site and play with it.

As we mentioned last month, we ran a campaign for Volvo's Subject 60 project. That involved promotion of the Subject60 event in London and a post about their 3D phone app which was the competition entry method. Participants had to download the app and find cubes hidden in London. Each cube contained a special code to allow entry to the Subject60 event - an interesting and inventive project that we were glad to be part of.

This month's reading
This month we were asked by a friend:

"Are there any web publishing books I should be reading? Am trying to learn more about the digital stuff and need a jumping off point. I tried to go to the book store the other day but the choices were brain boggling."

Well friend, it's a massive subject really. Our main tip is if you want to learn about digital stuff then "go native". That means the info you need in a digital format, books will generally be instantly out of date. Here are some starter links to get you going:

  • Firstly, remember to stay up to date with news, that's going to mean something like Media Guardian's digital section and Mashable's social media section being in your reader.
  • Then check out "A List Apart" and their posts on writing content.
  • For the social media side, check out Viral Loop - we've mentioned it before but it's a good overview of some of the online successes plus has a good overview of some of the history of the web - which rescues it from being instantly out of date.
  • We mentioned it last month, but If I Started Today by Chris Brogan is still a great guide to getting going with social media - there's nothing better than getting in there and getting your feet wet, learning by doing, etc!
Hope that's a good start - let us know what you think of the links.

Forthcoming
This month we hope to be releasing Chew the Fat's new site, built on the new Wordpress 3 with custom templates and widgets, all based around the 960 grid.

In addition, we've got a few secret projects which we hope we can share with you in our next newsletter (NDAs allowing!).

Finally
Something a bit random for making it to the bottom of the newsletter!

All the best for a great June (or what's left of it!),

Mark & James
