Discovery: Working Memory can be trained!
When I was in graduate school in the mid 1990s we didn’t know working memory could be trained. This is a primary reason phone numbers are 7 digits. Working memory was generally considered to be about 7 digits plus or minus one or two. Torkel Klingberg, the primary founder of Cogmed America is an MD PhD who did original research that found that you could indeed train working memory. This was truly a breakthrough discovery. Independent investigators have since replicated his findings. 80% of the people who complete this program see the benefits.
What is Working Memory?
Working memory is a key cognitive function used in daily life that allows individuals to hold information in their mind for brief periods of time, typically a few seconds. Working memory can be described as active attention. As human beings, we are constantly interacting with other people and performing tasks. The quality of what we do is highly dependent on how well our working memory is functioning. Some examples of working memory-demanding tasks are:
- Remembering instructions and the next step while working with a sequence of activities.
- Learning new things.
- Reading, understanding what you are reading and selecting information.
- Organizing your life, remembering what to bring, and where and when meetings occur.
- Listening to other people and responding appropriately.
- Time planning and having a sense of time.
- Holding back your impulses.
So, if you improve Working Memory you improve in all these areas. Working Memory is a critical component to many cognitive functions. So those symptoms that plague people with ADHD or ADD are addressed by improving working memory.
