Can captivity stimulate imagination?
Fine Art Exhibition at "Fort
Balaguier," Toulon, France
Penal colonies were French
penitentiaries dedicated to the hard labor. Abolished in
1938, they are now considered as historical monuments.
France and its French overseas departments had many penal
colonies among which was Toulon penitentiary and its
annexe "Fort Balladier."
More than 100,000 men were
imprisoned at Fort Balladier. A few of them created
handcrafts and artworks. Their artworks, paintings and
sculptures are a reflection of their lives in the penal
colonies. First of all, their sketches and paintings show
their ability to act in response to custody. Art was
a pretext to express their individuality and their humanity.
To create these artworks, the convicts used natural
elements or unused materials found on the sites where they
worked. They sculpted coconuts, engraved shellfishes,
painted, created straw marqueteries.
The convicts struggled to
survive hard living conditions, strived to find in the depth
of their hearts to develop a resilience process.
Deprived of freedom and dignity, this allowed them to exist,
to escape from everyday life and to create handcrafts and
artworks. These works were the only link between and
the rest of the world who wished to forget them.
All these handcrafts,
paintings, sculptures are currently exhibited at "Fort
Baladier" through an exhibition called "Les artistes du bagne". The exhibition features works from French public and
private collections.

Mary
Mansey's beautifully abstract photographs examine the
interplay of light and color as they reflect against the
rippling surface of water. These reflections poetically
mirror the artist’s own emotions experienced at the time at
which each photograph was captured.
