Houston IM News | Race Weekend 2010
Race weekend is here at last! Here's some key information you can use over the next couple of days.
Houston IM 2010 InfoMap
Our updated 2010 InfoMap is available online. It shows where everything going on this weekend is located — late registration & packet pickup, race-day parking, the course, the hotel, the start/finish line... it's all there. Check it out now!
Volunteer opportunities
Volunteer opportunities are still available for Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning! If you won't be skating, or you know someone who'd like to help, here's a chance to be of service while having fun in the sun with the best crowd around. Email us right away to get involved! (Please include your phone number!)
Late Registration and Packet Pickup
Late Registration and Packet Pickup is Saturday from 1:00pm until 5:00pm downtown at Cabo Mix-Mex Grill, 419 Travis (at Prairie), phone 713-225-2060. (When you park at curbside, don't forget to pay the meter, as downtown parking enforcement officers are merciless!)
If you just can't make it downtown on Saturday, packet pickup and late registration will also be available Sunday from 7:00am until 8:00am at Eleanor Tinsley Park — but to help things run as smoothly as possible on race morning, we strongly encourage everyone to come to Cabo and get things squared away on Saturday afternoon if at all possible. (Besides, you don't want to miss the Downtown Social Skate — see below!)
Downtown Social Skate
The Downtown Social Skate leaves from Cabo Mix-Mex Grill at 2:30pm Saturday — come join us! We'll check out some cool sights around downtown Houston and be back after about an hour.
Race photography
We're excited to announce that professional photographer Sandy Wilson, as well as members of the Lamar High School Photography Club, will be volunteering their services at the race on Sunday morning. All their images will be made freely available online in the days following the event. If you're skating, at packet pickup you will be given a small sticker with your race number; be sure to stick that number to the front of your helmet to help identify you in photos!
Changing-rooms and baggage safekeeping
There will be two extra-large portable toilets at the start/finish area that can also be used as convenient changing-rooms. Feel free to bring a change of clothes to the race site if you wish! We will also be providing an enclosed Courtesy Booth where you can safely leave bags and equipment under the watchful eyes of our volunteers, with a claim-tag system for pickup. This will also be the location where Lost-and-Found items will be kept.
Reminder: Helmets are required!
Please remember that during the event, all skaters must wear an ANSI-certified bike- or skate helmet as a condition of participation. If you don't own one, stop by your local bike or skate shop and buy one before the race; good models can be found for under $50. Trust us, your brain is worth the investment! We recommend choosing a helmet that is lightweight, well-ventilated, and (most importantly) fits the crown of your head with as little free-play as possible. If you're not sure how to adjust the straps on your helmet properly, bring it to the Expo on Saturday and a volunteer will help you get it right.
Daylight Saving Time ends this weekend
One more thing: remember that Daylight Saving Time ends early Sunday morning, so be sure to set your clocks back one hour and enjoy an extra hour of sleep — otherwise, you'll show up at the race an hour earlier than you expected!
Here we go!
We look forward to sharing this weekend's festivities with all of you! See you there, and may you enjoy your best skate ever!
